Taunton with no no car??

Hi

Friend and I are thinking of visiting Taunton by train is this a wise decision?

Is the train station close to town centre? Also is there plenty of places to visit without use of a car?

Thanks

The station is pretty central - it takes me 5 minutes to walk to teh County Ground, which is smack in the town centre.

What are your interests, and how long would you be thinking of staying ? there are buses to other places of interest, if you are prepared to do that.

You don't say where you are traveling from.....or if you are going to stay over. That would help to know the time frame.

As Roman says the station is pretty central, easy to walk or catch bus to centre of town.

National Express coaches also are easy.

Taunton is a 'market' town, it has a theatre, cricket ground and some clubs but most attractions are out of town.

Two of us, one travelling from London other from Cornwall. Plan to stay Friday and Saturday night. Thought Taunton was a good half way point.

Won't be down until late Friday but will have Saturday and most of Sunday to do something.

To be honest we are after a chilled weekend with good food, but would like something to do day time is there any places of historical interest nearby?

Or just somewhere for a wander that isn't shopping!

thanks

There is Dunster - a bit of a hike, about an hour by bus through countryside - but a wonderful place to spend the day. Has a castle with grounds & medieval village with all sorts. Nice ancient pub (in fact lots) with open fires, lots of places to eat, chocolate shop etc.

You could go by train on the WSR not sure if the steam trains are running then but a nice trip.

Sheppys Cider farm, see how cider is made.

Hestercombe Gardens - not sure if there is public transport and a bit late in the year but nice and peaceful to walk round.

Spa at Bishops Lydeard for a really relaxing day - about 15mins by bus.

For historical interest the Museum of Somerset recently re-opened after a multi-million pound facelift. It's right in the centre of Taunton and is open on a Saturday.

Hestercombe Gardens will be open on both the Saturday and Sunday (it's one of my favourite gardens to visit) but public transport is limited. Having said that it's only about 3 miles from the railway station so a taxi shouldn't be too much.

If you didn't want to bother with the Museum of Somerset (on the Saturday) you could get a bus direct to Wells and visit both the cathedral, vicar's close and the bishop's palace and gardens.

Don't know if the bus to Wells from Taunton goes via Glastonbury, but you can easily get a bus from Wells to Glastonbury. The view from the top of the Tor is fantastic on a clear day.

FYI Roman Citizen the bus goes directly from Taunton to Wells via Othery, Street and Glastonbury - I used my bus pass on it the other day.
