Best place to base ourselves for the south west of the UK?

We are travelling around Wales by car and are about to head down towards Cornwall and Lands End. have 3 nights and wondering where would be the best place to base ourselves for day trips etc. Taunton looked quiet good but just not too sure thanks for any info, cheers.

Taunton is not a suitable base for exploring Cornwall, it is too far away.

Don't forget that UK roads are not like Australian ones ....

Plymouth is an interesting city and is on the border with Cornwall, though not in the county itself. I've had quite a few happy visits to Plymouth, the Hoe and Barbican are some of my favourite places to go on a summer evening.

That said, I'd [probably go a bit further if I am doing day trips, presumably to places like St Ives or Falmouth as well as Land's End. Possibly Truro!

Does your three nights - two days include the day of travel from Wales? If it does you only have one full days in Cornwall, or two if it doesn't. Not long for such a long drive, especially if you then need several hours driving to get back to London.

Unless you are desperate to see Lands End, I suggest you reconsider Somerset which is a beautiful county, and have more time for sightseeing. Exmoor and the Quantocks and the coast are beautiful, there ard some lovely old villages, and a few miles inland you have the ancient cathedral city of Wells. The whole area is less commercialised and busy with visitors than Cornwall.

If you do decide to stay in Somerset, Taunton is central but not an especially attractive place in its own right. I'd suggest looking at accommodation in one of the villages going down towards the coast, such as Watchet or Dunster.

If you definitely want to see Lands End, be warned. Lands End itself is beautiful but you have to park in a , probably expensive, private car park and walk through a very tacky and out of place tourist 'attraction' If you have time, the best approach is to park at Sennen Cove and walk round the coastal footpath - about a mile or so, easy walking.

Well of course i would suggest Somerset & Exmoor :-)

It would give you a lot more time to explore and see some wonderful castles and countryside. Currently I don't know why but it is quiet so no queues anywhere and the sun is shining. The Exmoor ponies have a lot of new foals up on the moor.

Another option is to travel down the coastal road. Go to Taunton and follow the signs for Minehead and the A39. It will take you through some amazing towns and villages and along the coast across Exmoor. Would take a day to Cornwall but you would see some stunning bits of rural England. Loads of places to eat and drink along the way.

But if you want to sightsee in Cornwall from Wales you need to be up early and zap down the motorway as far as you can. You will miss loads of beautiful things and it will take quite some time. I would suggest St Ives area as it is lovely round there. You will only have a day, maybe two anyway.
