vegatarians beware in the chip shops in this area

For some strange reason the local chip shops in the scarborough whitby filey bridlington area cook the chips in beef dripping not sunflower oil like the rest of the country so are not suitible for vegatarians.

Yes, it's traditional isn't it?

There might be a few that use vegetable oil. I guess you have to ask them. I suspect you'll struggle in Whitby as they are so fierecely proud of their chippies

"not sunflower oil like the rest of the country "

The rest of what country?

Dripping is the traditional fat for frying fish & chips in a huge swathe of Britain. Sheffield might plough its own furrow in this. But north of Birmingham, you're generally more likely to find dripping than vegetable fat.

If vegetarians are uncomfortable with our national traditions, they're welcome to start their own. But not to invent the untruth that their preferences are shared with the rest of the population

Quite. It's not a "strange reason" at all. The only **correct** way to fry F&Cs is in dripping. If vegetarians can't deal with that, then is both their choice and their loss.

We have a F&C shop in Kent that uses beef fripping to fry in, and there is always a queue round the block on a Friday night!

I should have confirmed earlier that Sheffield *doesn't* plough its own furrow in respect of the oil used. I'm sure there are plenty of chippies there using dripping

In our experience vegetarians check suitability before they use a place(plaice??).

Dripping is traditional and long may it continue

Mcdonalds chips are properly vegetarian, but I know of no traditional chippy that serves veggie friendly chips. Seasoned vegetarians will know this. Learning these lessons is all part of the process of becoming a successful vegetarian. There are hidden obstacles everywhere, though it depends on how rigid you want to be.

Even when fish and chips shops use vegetable oil, which very many do these days especially since BSE, any chips fried in them will not be suitable for vegetarians. This is due to the fact that other stuff besides chips are cooked in the same oil thereby contaminating it for veggies. eg. battered fish, savaloy sausages, deep fried haggis (well in Scotland anyway!).

Even when cooked in vegetable oil, chippy chips usually have a distinct odour of meatiness for that very reason. To the pedants who claim only beef dripping is the correct way, I say TishAndPoo! LOL

If your feelings are so strong why do you support a shop that sells fish.It is a living creature too before it gets hooked.and gutted ready for the pot. As for potatoes and mushy peas think of the pain andf upset they must have leave the root or pod and being seperated from their brothers and sisters and then thrown into a pan of boiling water, Bet you hadnt thought of that one.

Give the OP a break. Vegetarianism is a steep learning curve. No-one is challenging the carnivores here, so why start challenging veggiedom. Just like other beliefs, there are varying levels of commitment and knowledge. Live and let live, if you'll pardon the pun, lol.
