Luton area for the day

We are flying into Luton and then meeting family. Unfortunately, they don't get off of work until 5am and we arrive at 9am. We are traveling with kids ages 11 and 13. Any suggestions as to what to visit/do in the area? Any great castles or cool villages to walk through? We will rent a car if we need to.

Luton doesn't have that much to see. You could head to St Albans (20 mins in a car, less by train) which has some roman remains, historic buildings, and impressive Abbey as well as lots of good pubs and restaurants. Or you could catch a train to London from Luton Airport Parkway station.

Thanks! I will check it out! If we caught a train, would we be able to get it from the airport?

We are heading into London after we see the family and friends, so will just "hang out" in the area until we can catch up with them...

Yes, Luton Airport Parkway is the airport station. A free shuttle bus runs between the station and the airport terminal building. Be aware that St Albans station isn't in the best location so it'd be worth getting a map before you travel.

Just to clarify " isn't in the best location" . I'm sure hh doesn't mean it's in a risky area.

It's not; but the station is a walk to the centre and Cathedral. This is because St Albans is on a hill and the station is in the lower part of the city. You should be able to get a bus easily.

Old town centre Historic Cathedral , walk down the hill other side to the park site of the Roman City of verulamiun destroyed by the Boadicia Revolt. Pleasant park small Roman Museum and theatre in St Michaels Village. Plenty of places to eat.

The shuttle bus between Luton Airport and Luton Airport Parkway station is no longer free of charge. You can, however, buy rail tickets within the airport which include the bus.

That's right ktw0, it's a walk from St Albans station to the interesting sights and not the case that the station is in a bad area.

Thanks! It looks like we might be renting a car, which gives us more freedom! Someone also mentioned Welbourne to me. Any thoughts?

Don't know Welbourne. There is one in Lincolnshire but a bit far for your trip even with a car and all that is left of the castle is the earthworks.

a bit further north from Luton (33mile) is the Stoke Bruerne waterways museum on the Grand Union Canal o rat Hatfield is Hatfield house or even closer to Luton is Knebworth House

A little bit closer to the airport is Stockwood Park which might kill a couple of hours - interesting museum, half decent cafe and if the weather is nice you can sit right under the airplanes as they come into land at Luton - quite a sight.
