Surprise weekend away for wife

I want to surprise my wife with a weekend away in the Lymington area. Looking for an intimate place to stay, perhaps a small hotel or small self catering cottage preferably in the New Forest not the town itself, with walks nearby. Also suggestions on nice pubs or restaurants for food. Any ideas/recommendations?

Yes, can do this, when will it be? You will have a car with you? Do you want, small and quaint, inn-like? Would you want pool/spa etc extras? Or foresty choc box?

Happy to drive to and fro, up to how many minutes out of Lym?

Thanks, help would be appreciated. My vision is a cosy inn with not too many rooms (not loads of residents) and decent food. Not bothered about spas etc, but preferably not fusty room and in a good area for romantic walks. We will have a car so within 10 mins of Lymington is fine. Not bothered about the coast as I know it will be busier this time of year and I want us to have some 'time out' together. Thanks for any ideas.

Hi again

OK, I've been thinking about your requirements.

I know you said not too many people (not sure there would be) but have a look at:

Rhinefield House Hotel - certainly ticks the romantic walks and good food boxes.

Carey's Manor (good hotel in Brockenhurst itself, with French restaurant Le Blaireau by the road, very good), might be a bit too big.

http://www.cottagelodge.co.uk/gallery.asp I don't know it, but it has good reviews and may tick more boxes, especially quaint, and small. Looks romantic. Incidentally, look at their general homepage for very helpful photos and links to places to eat/see etc.

http://www.bedandbreakfast-newforest.co.uk/ Daisybank Cottage - nice reviews, don't know it - looks like it might suit you.

I know you said "not" Lymington TC - but Stanwell House Hotel is rather lovely.

Then there's Gordleton Mill, rather unique - http://www.themillatgordleton.co.uk/

Have a think about those. I am also pondering the Beaulieu-Lymington Road, but would have to search specifically. There is Elmer's Court, but that is probably a bit large and exclusive club membership-like - certainly they were selling timeshares years ago, but might be worth a look. Also search Walhampton, Lymington. OK, I look at the Exbury Gardens website which gave me a couple of ideas -

Finally, if you haven't already, try this - http://www.thenewforest.co.uk/accommodation/

Oh and finally! This will definitely tick the lovely walks, but might be a little bit out for you - at least Brockenhurst and Lym give you something more to look at whilst walking - anyway - here:

http://www.theturfcutters.co.uk/ But I have no idea about the accommodation, only the location.

Hope this helps! I want to stay at those little cottages now!

I have never stayed at Rhinefield House Hotel.. but I did do a walk which passed behind the Hotel last weekend... the area around Rhinefeild is 'I think' one of the nicest parts of the Forest.. perhaps I shouldn't be telling everyone else this bit of information, as I don't want everyone to spoil what is a lovely place.

For further info on the area go to Google & enter in

Thank you all, I will have a look at those places. No good old country pubs with good rooms then? Very grateful for the help!

Thanks for the feedback :)

Look at : www.crownhotel-lyndhurst.co.uk/… Although traffic route can be problematic.

http://www.themasterbuilders.co.uk/ Steeped in history and quaint, and not so far from Lymington.

http://www.montaguarmshotel.co.uk/ - associated Estate property, in beautiful village, not difficult drive to Lymington.

Have a look at those! :-)

We come from the area but have always struggled to get the oldey world pub that you seem to be looking for. The Turf Cutters is nice and The Master Builders would be a good option, if more expensive. Would not stop in the Crown due to the location on a very busy main road and we did not have a great time in the Filly Inn. Careys Manor is a nice place but is larger than you may want. The Stanwell is nice in the centre of Lymington but I would not stay in the Angel hotel again.

I know this is not in the area you are looking at but we had a fantastic weekend at a place called the Brace of Pheasants in Plush (9 miles from Dorchester) and this seems to tick all your boxes. Lovely rooms, so quiet, romantic and oldey worldy, great walks in the countryside, good food in the restaurant ... just perfect when we went

Thanks to everyone for your help, I think I have found what I am looking for. Some friends have recommended the Red Lion near Lymington, in Boldre, as a good place to eat and they have a private flat for breaks. I have booked our weekend and looking at the websites, the trip advisor reports and my contact so far with the pub it all looks like we will have everything we want. Will let you know how it goes. Thank you. Rupe.

We were in the Red Lion last summer and it has been a regular stop for us over the years so I think you will not be disappointed. Boldre is a lovely village. Did not know they had a private flat and would be very interested in your views. Have a good weekend

Yes Red Lion is good and nice atmosphere. We went there with our best friends for a goodbye meal before we left the UK.

Hope you have a wonderful time, look forward to reading about it.
