Christmas time!!

What is the Lake District like during Christmas and the winter season?

Can anyone let me know please? Is it the same as any time of the year or are there christmassy things to do and see?

Thanks

Hello while there might be a few extra things going on at Christmas time in general the place will be very much the same as at other times of the year.

The one big point is that many of the commercial "Tourist Attractions" shut down at the end of October and then do not re open again until Easter.

If you wanted to check on which ones are open the Tourist Information Centres have a very good leaflet that covers all of the attraction and give there opening times and dates. I am sure any of their centres would post you one. (It's their main leaflet and is available in many languages)

Also the site golakes.co.uk has a searchable what on section.

Santa of course goes there at the same time as he does the rest of the World so all the towns and villages will look particularly attractive with their Christmas displays!!

Apart from the appalling weather, my memory of last Xmas visiting the Lakes was of surprisingly short days. It didn't get light until 8.15am and started getting dark as early as 3.45pm.

In summer, it's the reverse, of course, with slightly longer days than down south.

It also seems darker as we dont have all the light pollution associated with large conurbations.

If we have frost or snow it is just beautiful in Winter - make sure you have somewhere cozy to stay with good heating and a log fire!
