Is Durham City Center Walkable?

We would be arriving by train and wonder if the city center and most of its top sights are walkable? Thank you

Very walkable but note it’s hilly and cobbled streets / bad pavements if anyone in your party is bad on their feet.

You can catch a bus from the Railway Station to the Cathedral. Tickets cost £1 and are valid all day.

You can see the route of the bus here. Click on the download button for a timetable.

This saves the walk down from the station and up to the Cathedral. Durham is a compact city centre, buty as pointed out there are a lot of hills and cobbles!

When we had a short break there I downloaded a walk and printed it off as it had some good historical info, and we used it as a rough guide, but it was very easy to get around the city as it is fairly compact.

There are buses up to the cathedral if you struggle with hills.

There's lots of good cafes and pubs in Durham and we enjoyed the atmosphere, especially sitting outside the riverside pubs watching people rowing past.

The core of Durham around the cathedral has very few vehicles. The one road through the centre often has people walking down the middle of the road

There are also some lovely walks along the river banks too.

The train station is located a very short walk down hill from the main thoroughfare in Durham possibly 5 minutes max from North Road.
