Passport office

I've got an appointment at the passport office on Friday at 4pm. As we will be driving up from leeds with 2 young children we were going to spend a few hours in Durham, arriving at lunchtime, rather than driving there and straight back.

Is there anything to do close to the passport office? Is there a nice place to have a picnic ( my little boy loves picnics at the moment!)

The passport office is right by the river, you could go up to the DLI museum or to the loop of the River Wear around the cathedral.

you can have a guided tour of the castle, but check in advance if they are running them. the students who live in the castle take the tours, and as its university hols they may not be any. The cathedral cloisters were used as a location for harry potter, and the castle feels like Hogwarts, but wasnt.

the archaeological museum has some kids dressing up things. from the pasport office you could walk along the river (steps down on Framwellgate bridge, DH1 3RB, 54.776096, -1.578419 ) There are benches along the river bank where you could have a picnic with a view of castle and cathedral, then cross prebens bridge , turn left, and along the riverbank to arch museum (in the mil) or up the slope to the back of the cathedral (best way in )

University graduation ceremonies are taking place all this week in the Cathedral so the Cathedral, Castle and Palace Green will be very busy. There's a marquee on Palace Green and surrounding buildings are used for robing so there won't be any Castle tours this week because of this. It's a colourful spectacle and is worth watching. The timetable is on https:/…

As previously mentioned the riverbank either side of Prebends Bridge on the Cathedral side is a good place for a picnic. It's very secluded and the bank is wider and flat and there are a number of benches along the footpath.

If you walk in the opposite direction from the Passport Office and head upstream of Elvet Bridge the riverbank next to The Racecourse is also good for a picnic. It hasn't been used as a racecourse for many years but you can watch the boats (and possibly cricket if there is any), and there are a few benches.

If you want to kill an hour the Prince Bishop cruiser does leisurely cruises along the river starting from near Elvet Bridge. You may be encouraged to purchase refreshments. The ice cream from next to where the boat departs is very good.

As Durham will be busy, may I suggest using the park and ride. When you get to J 62 on the A1 turn right at the roundabout towards Sunderland. Keep in left lane and the park and ride is about 200 yards along the A690.

When getting the bus back, make sure you get the one for Belmont as there are other park and rides.. Children love buses too!

A good place near the Passport Office for a picnic is Wharton Park, excellent views overlooking Durham (Cathedral & Castle) and has a small play area.

Thanks all. Thanks for the parking advice!

How far is the park and ride away from where we need to be? How long is the ride? Do you know how late it runs?

Thanks

Probably 10 - 15 minute into Durham centre. Looks like it closes at 7.
