First time / Public transport / ferry towards Scotland?

We are thinking of flying into Isle of Man and stay for 2/3 nights and then move towards Scotland (4/5 nights). We do not rent a car and prefer hoStels. Any thoughts whether Isle of Man is suitable in this sense, or that the public transport is not available over the summer? We prefer rough coastal lines (photography) and are mid-20.

Quite a bit of the Electric Railway route has spectacular views of the coast
