devon good base for classical devon

looking to travel to devon, not sure north or south , just wondered for a week only can anyone recommend a destination with a nice beach , and all the traditional stuff associated with this area.

cream tea rooms, cobbled streets, quant shops, good choice of days out within 10 miles, some pubs, street entertainment, etc have been to paignton before have seen a nice site at westward ho , but not sure if too quiet , 3 adults no children or pets

regards

Haven't been to westward ho! for a while now, but used to frequent the place when my kids were younger. The beach is huge and sandy- the tide goes out a long way so there's always loads of room for everyone. It's close to Bideford for smallish shops and low key nightlife, although there were always a few pubs and restaurants in Westward Ho! Itself. Barnstable is about 10 miles away and is the local big town. I'm due a return visit to North Devon, I think!

Westward Ho! has a lovely beach but is more amusement arcades & surf shops than cobbled streets. You are not far from Clovelly which is a private cobbled village (entrance cost) and Lynmouth might also suit you if you have a car. Perhaps look at Croyde as an alternative - lovely beach & lively village nightlife.

Not many cobbled streets around but apart from that Exmouth might suit you and you could visit Exeter's Gandy Street for the cobbles www.exeter.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=7561

Agree with Riotstar. Westward Ho! isn't really a typical Devon village, not at all 'quaint' ,and the beach is the best thing about it.

Westward Ho is nothing much. For a lovely beach and a small village have a look at Croyde.
