Rome to Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio

We will be visiting Rome again in September and would like to take a day trip away from the city to a Orvieto and Civita. Is this easy enough to do? We don't mind getting up early to catch a train and then get back late. Also, we will be there the second Sunday in September. What time is the donkey race? Any advice would be helpful. Grazie!

There is adequate COTRAL bus service between Orvieto railway station and Bagnoregio (new town), but NOT on Sundays.

The bus doesn't leave from the railway station but Piazza Cahen which is up from the train station. You can reach Piazza Cahen either by bus, funicular or taxi from the train station.

If you want to see both Orvieto and Civita in one day, I don't think you will see much.

The bus ride from Orvieto to Bagnoregio is almost an hour, once you are there, you can take an shuttle bus or walk. The shuttle bus isn't that frequent, but you can walk up, about 20-25 minutes. You must pay careful attention to the bus schedule to make sure when the last bus leaves back to Orvieto.

I highly recommend you take a day trip to Orvieto, it's beautiful, easy to get to from Rome, and would be a very enjoyable day trip.

get a cab to civita or arrange a driver via internet search. the donkey races don't start until late afternoon 4-5. see orvieto early then hire taxi or driver to civita around 3 and back to orvieto for train back later.
