Abaco - Marsh Harbour- Casuaurina Point vs. Great Guana Cay

We've love Eleuthera for its tons of empty beaches , beachfront rentals and being able to snorkel right off the beach. And of course, THE PEOPLE!!!!

Just curious and checking into Abaco for future.

Difference betw theses two out-islands?

Weather - when is it best for swimming and snorkeling w/o wet suit in Abaco? Is Abaco only good for avid boaters? We like to swim and snorkel from off the beach w/o having to take boat all the time.

Just checking out 2 beachfront rentals in Abaco:

1 rental is on Marsh Harbour- Casuarina Pt -

"Abaco Palms" - http://www.vrbo.com/77295

2-other rental is on Great GuyanaCay-

"Beach Dreams" - http://www.vrbo.com/217700#photos

Anyone know or stayed at either of these homes?

Thanks.

Did you post your question on the main forum at www.abacoforum.com? You might get more answers! Good luck! Personally, I would suspect that Beach Dreams would have better off the beach snorkeling due to the location that is really just off of a reef in the Atlantic but I have not stayed at either.

Just my two cents but you might not get the most out of your trip if you don't boat in the Abacos. We stayed on GGC in May/June and had a great time, great shore snorkeling but we didn't get the same out island feel. Might have been better had we been able to boat around. The Abacos are more like a "little Florida" as my husband would say.

That being said, the owner of Beach Dream is very nice, corresponded a few times with him. It's right on the beach near the famous beach bar Nippers. The reef is supposed to be very nice there, we snorkeled a bit to the south just past the bar. There are quite a cluster of homes in that area too. You'll not likely have the beach to yourselves. There aren't many places on GGC where you don't see other homes. We stayed at Shore Thing on the south end where there are less homes. We only saw people on the beach there 1 day.

Can't speak to Marsh Harbour but it's a bit more like Nassau, lots of cars, people, busniesses, etc.

Overall we had a great time but we prefer the more rustic islands.

Thanks to DnaMobile and Jungledriver - feedback veyr helpful.

We live and work in Manhattan and when we 'vacation ' vs 'travel' we like to stay at places that are free of commercialism. crowds, discos, casinos, nightlife ,chic restauants and hi end shopping . We get all of this 24/7 all year and right at our doorstep! So we dont want this or see this when on vacation! "Travel" trip is different. tho'.

If abaco is somewhat like 'Little MIami" and Marsh Habour is crowded with cars and people , this would not be our preference.

We love Eleuthera, BVI, St Johns USVI and we are researching other OUT islands - Long Island, Cat Island and thought we'd check out Abaco and Exuma.

We are not sailors but if it is not too hard to man a moter/skiff, we'd love to rent one to get around Abaco/Exumas. We kayak and can handle sunfish but not windsurfing.

Our #1 love is being on empty pristine beaches where you see no one and can snorkel rt off shore ( in not more than 6-10; of water! FIshing is fine too but not top on our list.

Guess we can do more research.

SHore Thing looks great and would prefer to be in that location as it is quiet and has less people. But we need 4 bedroom beachfront. If you know of this type/size home around the same location as Shore Thing, let me know.

Thanks again for your comments!

Just my opinion, but i love the Abacos and find them nothing in the world like Miami!!!! If Jungle diver finds the Abacos a little like Florida then I certainly think it might be either that they feel more "Americanized" than truly Bahamian or that she is comparing them to areas like the panhandle of Florida- she does say that they saw few people on the beaches unless it was near Nippers.

I love the Exumas also and find that you can have access to very nice beachfront rentals and more low key, more authentically Bahamian life in Great Exuma than in the Abacos perhaps. I also think the price of those rentals is better than in Abaco for the most part. The snorkeling is ok in places- certainly not world class but it is a fun and beautiful island that we found easier to traverse than Eleuthera. I would definitely recommend it.

We also loved Long Island but have not been to Cat yet so I cannot comment. Like you- we loved the BVI's and St John (actually got married and honeymooned there)- have you been to Culebra, PR?? We loved it, too.

Happy to help- hope you find a great place!!

Was wondering how is the snorkeling in Culebra?

we thought it was very good. Check old VI/BVI/Culebra forums for "alashas's" reports and great underwater photos/videos.

Well to be fair, I didn't say the Abacos are like Miami, I've never been to Miami. I said my husband kept calling it "little Florida". I guess he felt that way because there are so many more tourists there. I don't feel that the areas that we saw have the same out island feel as the others we've been to. We had a great time though, saw some great reefs and wildlife. I finally got to swim with a reef shark, twice! Three times for my husband. And these weren't nurse sharks, did that in Eleuthera - fun but not the same. There are many great things about GGC and I'm sure the other cays are nice too. But I just didn't get the same vibe.

But if you do go to GGC be sure to go out at least once with Troy from Dive Guana. You've got to see the Fowl Cay marine park, it's beautiful. Try looking at Orchid Bay homes. You actually have to go through a gate and that community to get to Shore Thing so you'll find it's pretty quiet around there too and the grounds are beautiful! Also, I think someone recently stayed at Casuarina Point and wrote about it on abacoforum.com so take a look there too.

jungledriver- no offense meant to you at all by my response- I was quoting them about Miami, not you. I am sure you get a chuckle like i do with the idea of MH being "crowded with cars of people" - is there still like one stoplight on the whole island or has it grown in the last year to more? I know you meant "little Florida" more in a "Americanization" way. I think Casaurina Point would feel much less traveled and more quiet than a more touristy place like some of the other Abaco destinations might seem. personally, I like being a bit closer to restaurants and a grocery store. We had friends who stayed there last year and loved it though.

No offense taken A, just clarifying. You know more about the Abacos than I do. I think when your first visit to the Caribbean area is Eleuthera, your view of other islands is very skewed. Guess I should have said that in my original post.
