Day-trip to Florence

What is the easiest way to get to Florence for the day during our trip in July? We will have a rental car but are exploring other alternatives because of difficulty of parking in Florence. Are trains or buses available, how long do they take and where can we find English timetables

Hi Zoksie -

Where exactly are you coming from -- Castellina?

If so, you could drive to Scandicci, park your car in the lot, and take the marvelous tram right into Santa Maria Novella. Parking's free, and the tram is 1.20 euro one way.

(Check out www.viamichelin.it for directions from wherever it is you start to Scandicci.)

You can drive into Florence and park on a Sunday as the ZTLs are not in operation then. Get there early in the day - we had no problems finding a parking space south of the Arno before 10am.

The bus service is more for Siena if you'll be staying in Castellina (there's a bus to Florence at 6.15 am on working days - it returns leaving Florence at 17.50). A very good option is the one given above by Artviva. There's free parking near the trams top at the Ipercoop in Scandicci. Althernatively you could drive to Greve, leave your car there and take the bus. Personally, I think the Scandicci option is more practical.

Thank you very much - the Scandicci option and the tram sound ideal.

Yes, I agree with Artviva, the tram is a great option now. If you prefer to drive then there's a car park up at Piazzale Michelangelo (great views of Florence) and from there it's a 15 minute walk into town, or you can drive to the main station at SMN and park underneath as this is outside the ZTL, though only just, so be super careful.
