Hi lou059,

from Palermo airport to Cefalu' is 98km (60miles) and on depending on the traffic on Palermo's Ringroad it would take between 1h 15min and 1h 30min.

Cefalu' is a great location with everything you are asking. Beach, bars and restaurants with a beautiful medieval town centre and Norman cathedral dating to the XII century.

-Monreale's Cathedral is one of the 'must see' of the area and from Milazzo you could reach the Aeolian islands.

-Palermo is a very intresting city, full of history going from Punic remains to Arab and Norman Palaces and Baroque churches and much more (for Cefalu' - Palermo use the train!)

-If you are intrested in Greeks ruins the nearest archeological site to Cefalu' is the Greek town of 'Solunto' next to the town of Santa Flavia but if you really like history a day trip to the 'Valley of the Temples' is well worth it (153km, 2h from Cefalu').

-The small charming towns on the mountains behind Cefalu' and the 'Regional Park of the Madonie' deserve a visit too.

Enjoy! Salvo

Salvo is correct - Cefalu should be your destination!

If staying in Cefalu, is the public transportation ample for sidetrips or is a car needed?

Depends where you where you will be day tripping.

Palermo is best reached by train. If you want to day trip to the Aeolians, the train to Milazzo is also best. Buses run from Cefalu to the Madonie towns, but a car would be much more convenient for visiting the Madonie towns.

Agrigento can be reached by train (2.h hours)or bus.

You would need a car to tour Etna.

There are also some companies offering excursions in Cefalu.

FranSicile also offers many options.

Hi lollygal,

the train line on the north-coast is good and offers a decent service. Timetables at:

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

About ample it depends on what you mean with sidetrips. On the train you can easily reach Palermo, Milazzo (port for the Aeolian islands) and most of the little towns along the coast but to go inland it's a different matter.

The two company below run the local bus lines but I have no idea how often buses depart from Cefalu':

- Autolinee Lombardo & Glorioso. Address: S.C. Caldura Ferla, 2 int. 2 Cefalù (Pa) Tel: +39 0921 923648 or 921885. E-mail: lombardoeglorioso@libero.it

- F.lli La Spisa di Vilardo Sebastiano. Via Cavour n.2. Cefalù (PA) Tel: 0921-424301

Where would you like to visit?
