Segesta / Selinunte / Agrigento from Cefalu

Hi,

we're gearing up for our departure on the 11th of September, we'll be staying in Cefalu for 14 days.

We would like to visit Segesta / Selinunte / Agrigento (all three of them) and are wondering what the fastest way is to get to these archeological sites.

We'll be using bus and trains.

Is it far a walk from the bus stop / train stations ?

Ciao nessler,

Cefalù is not the best base for these destinations on public transport!

Take the train from Cefalù to Agrigento and the local bus to the Valley of the Temples.

Agrigento’s train and bus stations don’t share the same location.

Hover over this map for the locations of the train and bus stations in Agrigento.

Agrigento’s train station is located at Piazza Guglielmo Marconi.

Agrigento’s bus station is located at Piazzale Rosselli.

The local bus to the Valley of the Temples also departs from Piazzale Rosseli.

Take the train from Cefalù to Palermo for Segesta and Selinunte, then follow the instructions in these earlier threads.

Have you thought about renting a car? Cefalu being a smaller city there is probably a palce to park it. I rented an automatic car for 464 british pounds (About $700) for 14 days in feb 2010 through Autoeurope UK. From Cefalu you woud get to spend more time at the sites and less time traveling there.

Hiring a car would certainly facilitate touring, but with a pedestrian historic centre, parking is challenging in Cefalù.

Google map of western Sicily, Cefalu is the blue swimmer marker

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=105980956320679908243.000461cbcf4bb9daccda8&ll=37.805444,13.287964&spn=1.03076,1.760559&z=9

Driving it would take 2 hours to get to Agrigento

2.5 hours top Selinunte

2 hours to Segesta

At Agrigento the ruins are a ways outisde of town. Modern Agrigento in the background

Mille grazie, vostro aiuto e molto apprezzato !

Oh, we have thought about renting a car, but are a bit afraid of driving Italian style...

We would like to visit maccalube (near agrigento) and take a hike in the parco delle madonie but we wouldn't know how to do it with public transport.

Parking wouldnt be a problem since there is a space reserved at the hotel.

Ciao nessler,

Since so many of your destinations are located in Western Sicily, why not just stay in Western Sicily and avoid these long and tedious day excursions, or even split your time between Western Sicily and Cefalù.

Take the train from Cefalù to Palermo and the Russo bus line from Palermo to Lo Zingaro.

Russo Autoservizi runs bus service from Castellammare del Golfo to Scopello from Mondays through Saturdays.

From 15 June, and throughout the summer until 15 September, Russo runs the bus service between Castellammare deo Golfo and Scopello every day of the week including Sundays, and it also runs bus service to Lo Zingaro.

Russo:

http://www.russoautoservizi.it/orari.html

There is bus service from Cefalù to the Madonie.

AST:

But it would be impossible to reach the Vulcanelli di Macalube without a car.

The Vulcanelli di Macalube are quite isolated – Located at the end of a paved road at 3,4 km from Aragona. Once the road ends, you still have to walk into the site – There are views of Aragona in the distance from the site. There is nothing around the Vulcanelli di Macalube and you would require a car to arrive to the site.

travel to and from Sant'Angelo Muxaro:

You might consider hiring a car – A car would certainly facilitate your travels.

Best Wishes!

Our tour operator didn't offer anything on the other side of Palermo I'm afraid.

Just checked, but going from Cefalu or Palermo to Enna seems completely impossible with public transport...

We might hire a car, but as I said, we are afraid of driving there, especially in the mountains as we have no experience in driving through the mountains at all.

Why not design your itinerary yourself nessler? Or find a tour operator with offerings that better suit?

Where else does your tour operator have offerings?

Enna is a provincial seat and fairly well connected by public transport.

Enna has a train station; you could arrive from Palermo or Cefalù by train, albeit deadly long and with many connections from either.

But SAIS Autolinee runs service from Palermo to Enna (01h45).

Driivng on the autostrada A29 (labelled E90 on Google map) andf SS115 (Highway from A29 to Agrigento) was not bad at all. The road is supported by columns in Low spots (A29dir near Segesta)

http://www.slowphotos.com/photo/showphoto.php?photo=54633&cat=4477

and has tunnel through the mouontains in other spots

on the way to Agrigento on SS115 below

We did not drive near Palermo or east of there on A29 though.

It would very much depend where you were driving.

Autostradas are good fast roads to drive. But if you’re staying in Cefalù and heading west, you would have to drive Viale Regione Siciliana, Palermo’s ring road, and it’s horrific to drive.

The A20 along Sicily’s northern coast is easy driving, as is the A19 towards Caltanissetta-Enna and Catania.

The Madonie roads are mountainous roads, but not overly challenging to drive, and you wouldn’t encounter traffic.

Palermo’s airport is west of the city - If you had a tour operator with offerings in Western Sicily, you could hire the car at the airport and drive the A29 in Western Sicily.

As lupaling said, the SS115 along Sicily’s southern coast is a good road to drive. From Agrigento, take the SS640 to Caltanissetta, and connect to the A19 to Cefalù.

Return the car in Cefalù and take public transport back to the airport in Palermo.

With two weeks for your holiday, you certainly owe yourself a more varied itinerary than just spending the two weeks in Cefalù without a car.
