Which resort to choose ?

Hi All

We are already planning next summers holiday and have picked Lake Garda. The problem is we cant choose were to go. We have looked at Garda ,Bardolino and Riva but if there are any other suggestions anybody has we are happy to consider them. We like a place that has plenty of places to eat and drink and watch the world go by. But with a relaxed kind of vibe. Any advice would be great.

For me you have just described Bardolino but no doubt other people will each have their own favourites.

Hi, do you know yet which month you'll be travelling or how you will be getting around?

If you are flying into Verona Airport then Bardolino and Garda will be a shorter transfer and (presuming it's the same next year) there's a bus from the airport to both towns. To get to Riva using the current bus timetable would require two buses with a change in Garda. Many hotels offer an airport transfer so that's something to look for when searching for accommodation.

The scenery round Riva is more mountainous, so if you prefer mountain views then the north of the lake may be better.

An idea of your interests (hiking, cycling, water-sports, gardens, Roman ruins, churches etc.) may help us to suggest the ideal town.

We really liked Bardolino, and convenient for Verona airport, also consider Malcesine which has the breathtaking scenery of the Northern areas of the Lake,

Thanks for all the feed back.

Getting from the airport wont be a factor in our choice because we will be booking a package. We would be interested in visiting Venice, Florence And Verona. We do like mountainous areas because of the scenery but we are not hikers. We are looking for a place that is big enough to walk around after dinner that has a good choice of bars for a few drinks before we head back for bed.

For visiting Verona and Venice the south of the lake would be better, there are direct buses to Verona costing only €4. There are organised excursions to Venice taking a couple of hours and also further afield to Florence but that journey would be around 3 hours.

Hi, if you are planning to go for two weeks then you could have a week in the north and a week in the south, but if you are going for one week then Garda or Bardolino would be my choice. They are both well-placed for travelling around to other lake towns.

Will you be going to Verona, Venice and Florence by organised excursions? Verona is very easy to do by local bus from Garda/Bardolino so there is no need to book an excursion which will be relatively expensive.

Venice can be done by local transport (bus/train) but the Venice By Night organised excursion is a good way of seeing Venice when the day trippers have gone home.

These are the excursions that will be on offer:

The Florence excursion is a VERY long day from the lake. We did it once and felt that the time we spent travelling there and back was not worth it for the small amount of time we had in the city itself.

I sometimes find when I'm looking at travel brochures that one particular hotel will appeal to me which helps with the resort choice. You can read hotel reviews here to see how they compare:
