What would be the easiest way to travel from Verona train station to the hotel? If taxi, any idea on charges?
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Gardone Riviera a couple of years ago--lovely!We took the train from Verona to Desenzano as suggested by someone here in the forum. There was a bus to Gardone Riviera but we waited a very long time (2 hours?) and taxis were few and always full. We eventually got a bus and it did stop very close to the hotel. However, we discovered that a bus to Brescia ran more frequently to their train station from the stop across from the hotel. Next time we intend to use that route. Both were buses used by the locals so made several stops. A good way to see the
You could get the train to Desenzano as previously mentioned, then taxi down to the ferry terminal for a ferry to Gardone. Going by last years timetable the last normal ferry left Desenzano at 1500hrs arriving Gardone around 1634hrs (there was a later faster therefore more expensive ferry).
If memory serves well the hotel is close to the Gardone ferry terminal.
Here is the cheapest and most geographically direct way to go:
1. Trenitalia regionale train from Verona Porta Nuova Station to Desenzano
2. Transporti Brescia bus from Desenzano train station to Gardone Riviera (drops you at the Grand Hotel Gardone Riviera).
Try to select a train which gets you into Desenzano with a reasonable margin of time (20-30 minutes) to connect to one of the infrequent buses to Gardone. Be careful to note that schedules change around the middle of June to the middle of September ("estivo"). The rest of the year is "invernale". Some buses operate for the entire year ("annuale"). Some run only on Sundays and holidays ("festivo"); others operate daily ("giornaliero").
If you want a more scenic trip, take a taxi down to the Desenzano Port, then hop on a boat to Gardone. The boat dock at Gardone is right by the Hotel. This however will cost more and also involves the taxi connection.
You could indeed take the train all the way to Brescia, then hop on one of the more frequent buses to Gardone, but this involves "backtracking" and is geographically inefficient, more expensive, and time consuming. Better to find a convenient train/bus connection at Desenzano, as explained above. If you study the schedules carefully, you'll be able to work out a smart connection.
