need to travel from Livigno to Florence by train (via Milan)

Hello all. We're thrilled to be travelling to Livigno for the 1st time in mid Jan '14! Just trying to sort out a couple of little transfer details before we leave, namely... after our stay in Livigno, on 25 Jan we're going to Florence, and have found that the Italian trains run from Tirano to Florence via Milan. The Livigno tourism bureau has advised that they can book us on the bus from Livigno to Tirano, however not the train from Tirano to Florence.

Has anyone here travelled this route and if so is it really necessary to pre-book the train at this time of year? Is this a busy time for train travel in Italy, or can we just arrive at the Tirano train station and book on the spot? Any info/advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Sharon

You don't HAVE to book anything, and for the R train from Tirano to Milano Centrale, you can't anyway (you can buy tickets in advance, but it makes no difference to price, you can't reserve a seat, and there are disadvantages in terms of flexibility). For the Frecciarossa from Milan to Florence (the only way you are going to get there in 4h45 from Tirano) it would be much cheaper to book in advance, but you should also be able to buy tickets on the spot for the departure you want. To give you an idea, the total price for Tirano-Florence would be €61.05 purchasing today for travel today, whereas purchasing today for travel on, say, 14 Jan, you can get the same ticket for €30.05. You can look for yourself on www.trenitalia.com

I don't know exactly what you mean by "mid-Jan" but what makes the difference in terms of how busy the trains are between Milan and Florence is the day of the week and the TIME of travel, given that you have commuters on that line on weekdays.

Thanks for the info! I've just checked the trenitalia.com website and see the prices are good, namely €40 pp Livigno - Firenze if booked now for 25 Jan '14. It's a Saturday and just have to get the new bus timetables from Livigno tourism to work out how long it will take us to get from Livigno to Bormio bus station, then Bormio to Tirano train station - as early as possible on Saturday. It's a weekend, however as Livigno seems to be a Saturday to Saturday type ski resort, there may be other guests using the buses and trains into Italy.

Since you travel on Saturday, consider also this Trenitalia offer: on Saturday two people on long-distance trains (ie, in your case: Milano-Firenze) could be charged as a single person:

www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp…

Two remarks:

- there is a limited amount also of these discounted tickets

- obviously this offer is made on the full fares, so it may be that you find offers even better, if - as written by qaminari - you purchase your ticket in advance.

Per the current timetable, the earliest you can leave on a Sat. is at 9.40, arriving in Milan at 15.40 (changing, as you know, in Bormio and Tirano). Hance you have high speed trains, currently for as little as 29 euro (or a slower InterCIty for just 9 euro, which takes 3.5 hours as opposed to 1hour 40 minutes).
