driving from venice ( martallego) to Val Gardena Ortisei

We are a family of 4 with 2 kids aged 7 and 8 years. Staying for 4 days in Martellago for venice trips and plan to do a day trip preferably driving up ( though we are open to cheaper tours if they could go more into the mountains) to the dolomites.

Have gone through some forum topics and realized that Cortina would be the most convenient from Venice ( dont know if the same applies to Martellago). Whereas Val Gardena/Orteisi will be much more closer to the mountains and more beautiful. We could leave in the morning by 6.30-7 am. What would be a reasonably good path keeping in mind it should be easy to follow on the GPS, not longer than 3-31/2 hrs one way and which would get us reasonably proximal to the mountains with preferably a cable car ride in between for the kids and then return Martellago no later than 6-7 pm. Please advice.

Martellago to Ortisei takes some 3 hours, mostly by motorway: https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=Martellago,+VE&daddr=Ortisei,+BZ&hl=it&sll=41.29085,12.71216&sspn=28.00076,39.506836&geocode=Fd_5tgIdBY-5ACkNfZsmwcp-RzF_4kCcn6Cz8g%3BFXunxgIdWyKyACm524Cn-RJ4RzE7oJYosjXYOg&oq=ortisei&mra=ls&t=m&z=9

Cortina d'Ampezzo is much closer from Venice and by consequence from Martellago too https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=Martellago,+VE&daddr=Cortina+d'Ampezzo,+BL&hl=it&sll=46.021761,12.255249&sspn=1.621112,2.469177&geocode=Fd_5tgIdBY-5ACkNfZsmwcp-RzF_4kCcn6Cz8g%3BFbcmxgId5Cy5ACk_A0fSNTR4RzEr5JJ7QzA83Q&oq=cortina+&mra=mrv&t=m&z=9

I don't get what you mean by "Val Gardena/Ortisei will be much more closer to the mountains and more beautiful". Cortina is nicknamed "La perla delle Dolomiti" ("Dolomiti's gem"), well known as one of the most beautiful places in the Dolomiti area, surrounded by mountains and nearby other magnificent places too (i.e. Lago di Misurina, Tre Cime di Lavaredo...).

Obviously Val Gardena is nice too, but for a day trip I'd suggest Cortina in order to save time to spend in the mountains instead of travelling.

Thank you so much. That makes things clearer for me. I think I will go with cortina. Can we do Tre Cime di Lavaredo with a cable car somewhere in the area?

Tre Cime di Lavaredo are only accessible by toll road (from Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo) or by foot.

For cable cars (and much more) around Cortina check out http://www.dolomitisuperski.com/en/cortina
