Pompeii - usually easier to fit into itineraries as well.

Paestum is also wonderful, but not as convenient to reach.

Pompeii:

Paestum:

Puti to miss either, but enjoy!

Paestum has 3 hugh temples and lots of foundations. Unlike Pompeii it was deserted then the locals stole the stone to build other things. Pompeii is better but Herculanium is smaller but much better and more preserved. I would do Herculanium & the National Museum in Naples which has all the artifacts from all 3 sites on display.

The artifacts from Paestum are *not* in the Archeological Museum in Naples; they're in the museum at Paestum itself.

Zerlina is correct - The National Archaeological Museum of Paestum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum), Via Magna Grecia 917 (tel. 0828-811023), is across from the Ceres Temple. It displays the metopes removed from the treasury of the Temple of Hera (Juno) and some of southern Italy's finest tomb paintings from the 4th century B.C. The Diver's Tomb is an extraordinary example of painting from the first half of the 5th century B.C.

Herculaneum is smaller and better preserved than Pompeii.

Herculaneum:

The National Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale) is outstanding!! The mezzanine galleries are devoted to mosaics excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum.
