Train/bus information

Please advise best/easiest way to travel from Spoleto to Florence. We would like to take the train, but are not familiar with the language or how transportation system operates. Thank you for responding. We will be there in June 2014.

Well you will have to take a train from Spoleto to Rome, and there you will catch the train to Florence. It will take you about an hour and a half to get to Rome and then another hour and a half to get to Florence. Cost looks to be about 75 euros. Check out this site...disregard the dates:

Much luck...

No need to go into Rome. Use the official trenitalia website, as suggested by #1. There are trains with a change in Foligno (journey still takes 3+ hours). I input a random date/time of Monday 3 Feb 0800 and fares start at €16.05 one-way.

As Aurelia08 wrote, the best way for Spoleto-Firenze is a train change in Foligno.

The journey time is the same or less than via Rome, and the cost is much less, because the trains Foligno-Firenze are "Interregional", so very low fares. For these trains the reservation isn't necessary nor possible, there's no advantage (unlike that for fast trains) to buy tickets in advance. Just buy tickets in Spoleto on departure's day or on the previous day, and validate them before boarding the train.

Direct "interregional" trains leave from Foligno to Firenze at 9:12 am, 11:05 am, 1:03 pm, 3:03 pm, 5:08 pm.

The only exception to the above is the uncomfortable Intercity Spoleto-Firenze (it departs at 5:32 am!), Which is why the reservation is compulsory (included in price) and buying in advance allows discounted fares.

To check the complete timetable, follow the website Nurioopta has shown you in the first post.

My husband and I will be in Spoleto for two weeks in September. We would like to make three trips to other towns by bus or train.

Can you share with us your favorite places?

We will also be in Florence for two weeks.

Hi Lizannie

all the basic information on the routes between Spoleto and the other Umbria's cities by public transport can be determined through these two sites:

www.trenitalia.com. then click on UK flag

http://www.umbriamobilita.it/it

(the last is only in Italian, but easily understandable by Google Translator).

The major sights from historical and artistic point of view, at a level comparable to Spoleto or even more, are (in alphabetical order) Assisi (and nearby area), Gubbio, Montefalco, Orvieto, Perugia, Spello, Todi.

Immediately outside Umbria, Cortona is also easy to be reached .

At a level just a little less there are Bevagna, Citta di Castello (and nearby Sansepolcro, in Tuscany), Foligno, Narni, Norcia, Trevi. Just outside the region: Fabriano.

For the nice landscape should be also mentioned the Lake Trasimeno (village of reference, even for the excursion to the isles: Passignano) and the "Marmore" Falls, a short distance from Terni (but it is implied that even the towns just mentioned can boast of beautiful landscapes).

I hope this helps
