good transport links to Pisa, Portofino etc?

We are thinking of booking a holiday staying at the Palace Hotel in Viareggio. Is this a good choice of location, and how easy is it to get around using public transport from here? Any advise on the best day trips to take etc? We are hoping there may be some boat trips from here. Any help you can give is much appreciated.

From Viareggio you can visit Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Siena by train www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

Portofino, however, is going to take two hours. Take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure, then a 15 minute bus ride or (in season and much less frequent) go by boat instead of bus)

And in season there are boat trips to the Cinque Terre from Viareggio, but dates and times are not yet available on www.navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it/home.asp…
