For trains to Frienze S. M. Novella and to Siena, see www.trenitalia.com - click the UK flag first for English, and enter your 'hour' of departure e.g. enter '8' for 08.00. To see fares, use a date this week. Buy tickets in Italy not online. Validate (time/date-stamp) before boarding.
Siena takes a long time. Lucca and Pisa are much nearer trip alternatives.
There are a few small free beach areas, but these are unbearably crowded in August. For very extensive free beach areas, take a local bus along the seafront to Torre del Lago Marina then walk south.Edited: 15 June 2014, 20:49
That's Firenze S. M. Novella....
Thank you for your reply it is very helpful.
We were able to rent chairs and an umbrella at one of the "Bagno" places along the beach(there are dozens). 15e for an afternoon. Thought this was a fair price for use of chairs, clean sandy beach, lifeguards, restrooms, and changing rooms and of course the kiosk nearby.
Our hotel in Viareggio gave us a signed receipt to get discount at one of the beach bars, this was valid for our full stay. The food was lovely at all the cafes we visited on the seafront. Each station had it's own lifeguard on duty too.
Many thanks for all the replies to my post. We have returned from a great holiday at Viareggio and were amused to see the size of the public beach! However, we were told by the owners of Hotel Katy that there is a large public beach the other side of the harbour. We didn't go but if anyone has a car or is prepared to walk apparently it is a large beach.
What is the cheapest way to get from Pisa Airport to Viareggio?
Take the bus outside arrivals (2euro) to Pisa Centrale train station then take a Regional train to Viareggio (3.40euro) or an Intecity train for 7.50euro.You can buy your bus ticket in the airport arrivals hall.Remember to put your ticket into the validation machine on the bus itself, and after buying your train ticket, remember to validate your train ticket in one of the machines scattered around the train station before boarding.Have a nice trip.Edited: 03 August 2014, 13:20
Thank you very much!
The direct buses will probably be cheaper pisa-airport.com/downloads/orari_2013-2014_p… but are slower.
