Volterra, Italy (tuscany)
Do you want an old world stop when you are in Tuscany? We had a wonderful time in the ancient Etruscan, walled city of Volterra. In late May there were very few tourists, which gave us a better feel for the city. Our family stayed in the old monastery and it was wonderful, inexpensive and full of charm. It had a parking lot and we were able to walk anywhere we wanted from there. It wouldn't have been nearly as much fun if we hadn't hired Annie Adair of Tuscan Tours as our tour guide. We chose a morning walking tour of the city from her array of offerings. Annie was delightful and we learned so much more of the fascinating history than we would have reading a guide book. She was a great interpreter in the alabaster workshop telling us what the artist was doing each step of the way as he produced a beautiful piece of art. You don't need to be "on a tour" to hire a guide and it is absolutely worth every penny in added memories.
