Volterra Medieval Festival

We will be staying in Siena during the time including the first few days of the Volterra Festival, which is nearby. We see the Volterra ads saying Sundays are "the best" for the festival (though very crowded). Can any describe what is "better" or different on the Sundays of the Volterra fest? What would we miss by going the 18th (Mon) instead of 17th the first Sunday? Wouldn't mind avoiding the Sunday crowds and parking mess and also, on 17th, we will be just coming off the Palio excitement in Siena. Thank you!

During the week there are mostly just the stalls (not all of them, since some of them are run by people who have their jobs to go to). On weekends there are the costume events and more activities. Try to be there on a Sunday. http://www.volterra.net/events.htm

Thank you; that is along the lines of what I suspected, so very good to have confirmation. Since we are staying in Siena about 1.25 hours away, sounds like maybe we should plan to arrive in Volterra by no later than 10 am perhaps, to help with the parking on that first Sunday?

Yes, the earlier the better. It's not that parking is difficult, it's that the roads leading to Volterra slope steeply upwards, so the further off you park . . .
