Arachon Family Holiday

Hello,

Looking at Arcachon or one of the neighboring villages in the bay for this summer's holiday.

We are coming from the UK and I am wondering if its feasible to travel there by car crossing at Calais. How long would the drive be? If we were to split up the trip with a couple of stop overs, what would be some nice spots along the coast to overnight for a day or two? We have two small children so this also factors into the driving aspect.

Finally, any good gites to rent in the Arachon area? Looking at 10-14 days for two adults and two children.

Thanks,

LTT

You'd have a much shorter drive by taking a ferry from Portsmouth. Have you considered the cost difference between driving (fuel + tolls + ferry + insurance + wear & tear + fatigue) and flying to Bordeaux & renting a car ? See www.viamichelin.com for itineraries & costs.

You should also factor in the cost of overnight stop(s) into tradeform's reply. However, it all depends on where you are in the UK as to how the drive to Portsmouth compares to the drive to Dover.

For accommodation, these sites should get you started.

To answer your question -

Calais to Arcachon =8.5 hrs

Le Havre (Portsmouth) to Arcachon = 6.75 hrs

To go via the coast for some stops, unless it was near to Calais (eg St Valery) would add a lot of extra distance to your journey.

I would suggest 1 stop with either option. Loire valley would be good (maybe spend a day there for a break and see a chateau, kids love castles) but it depends very much on your ferry timing, and your childrens travel durability.

Another day stop option, depending on timing, nearer your destination would be Futuroscope at Poitiers.
