MSM - open at night? Place to stay to see lighted MSM @nite?

We are driving from Paris to MSM, then on to Bayeux and places beyond. I have been told the best tour of MSM is at night after the crowds have waned but cannot find that it is open beyond 6-7pm. Also, where best to stay in conjunction with the mont? We would like to see the night light view even if we cannot vist at night. Many thanks.

Merci,

Marilyn

What is it that you want to see? The Mont itself does not--cannot, really--close, and you can see the abbey buildings from during the hours when there are no tours scheduled. The village shops and restaurants are open most evenings,

Sorry to be unclear. We would like to visit/tour the mont at night but understand according to their website that they close (boot you out) between 6-7pm; just trying to verify if there is access after 6pm.

As far as the lighted view. I am told the mont is gorgeous at night and was only wondering if we could see it from our (possible) hotel, Hotel Vert.

Again, thanks

Mont St Michel is a town on an "island" connected to the mainland by a dike. The town doesn't close. On top of the rock to which the village clings is the Abbey. That closes at night. During July August there are nocturnal visits of the Abbey.

Salut!

This is a really good question. I am presuming that Marilyn thought (as I did) that Mont St Michel (island) is only the Abbey and that the rest of the town is on the land? I would also like to know if this is not the case.

I had thought too that you go there, go to the abbey on the island and can then come off and watch the changing hues of dusk surrounding the island from a cafe somewhere and take photographs. Is this not so? Is the only accomodation on the island itself?

Many thanks in anticipation,

Lea

There are hotels on the "island", and on the mainland just off the causeway.

From the Hotel Vert you won't see the mount directly. But walk about 200 yds to the Relais St Michel and you'll have a clear view across the causeway. You could walk along the road towards Avranches and get a different view.

As for seeing it lit up at night, it depends when you're going; in mid-June it won't get dark until about 11pm, at the moment it's about 7.30pm, after next week (when the clocks change) it will be 8.30pm.

We stayed at the Relais St Michel. It is the very last property before the causeway. It is a modern, spacious place, with an excellent restaurant, at a reasonable price. I recommend it highly. Once the sun went down, we strolled across the causeway and took dozens of pictures of the Mont all lit up. The following morning, we drove the short distance to the island, and beat all the tour buses in enjoying the Abbey.

Enjoy

Reasonable prices depends on ones point of view. The Relais Saint Michel is more than twice as much as Hotel Vert

This is the official site and lists many things, including accommodation and tide times (sometimes there are high tides that come sweeping in fast and at one stage they surrounded the island. Now it is rather silted up but it is still spectacular when it happens)

We stayed on the island in the Hotel St Pierre.

Should you stay right on the island request a room that does NOT overlook the one and only street, it is busy and noisy all night, first with tourists then with rubbish and supply vans.

We walked back along the causeway at night to get photographs.

Just wondering if they kick you out of the Abbey at closing time?
