Mt St Michel - DIY or Guided?

We are staying in Pontorson the first week on August and after ploughing through many threads, it looks like late afternoon - 4.30ish - is the best time to arrive to avoid the worst of the crowds and traffic jams.

But ... can anyone advise the best way to find out what's what when we're there? I read one reviewer felt the self-audio guide was def not value for money and commented that she was given an English sheet that said vertually the same thing with it! So, is there much information as you go around in the different areas or are there opportunities to join SMALL English speaking tours at the tail end of the day? Alternatively I suppose the Tourist Office might sell guides in English?

Any advise greatly appreciated - I've always wanted to go and don't want to come away frustrated.

When you get your ticket you should ask if there will be a tour in English in a quarter of an hour or so. If there isn't , or if the start is too long to wait for, take the audio guide. I agree it's not as good as a human guide but it's beetter than just wandering round not knowing what you are looking at even if it is amazing just to look at.

You need to check when you buy your ticket because you have over a hundred steps still to get the level of the church where the tours start.

Just a quick update ...

For our first early morning daytime trip, we borrowed a basic guide book from a friend (feel a Rough Guide etc would be as useful) and made our own way around, managing to avoid the big tour groups and change direction when necessary! At times we were also near a particularly loud (rude!) English guide and did pick up one or two comments that were helpful but besides that we were happy with the information we had.

Our second and most enjoyable visit was in the evening - we enjoyed the sun set, saw the vast sand flats, found the still quiet corners as the visitors left, then witnessed the rush of the tides and finally saw the Mont in floodlights. Perfect.

Maybe we'd go for a guide if we were to come again in winter ...
