Driving from Roscof to St Jean De Monts - Best route

I am driving (during the day) from Roscof to St Jean De monts and was looking for suggestions regarding the best route. I recall Rennes being a bit of a traffic nightmare from years ago. would I be better taking the more westerly / coastal route via Brest, Carnac etc or inland Via Renne and Nants?

Thank you

You can bypass Rennes. If you're coming in on Brittany Ferries you will be by passing Rennes very early on a Sunday, you will barely notice you are passing through!!

Brest is very far West and will add on a huge mileage to your trip.

If we're going down to Sarlat, we go Rennes-Nantes and onwards.

You could also drive down inland and go through Huelgoat - fascinating town http://www.huelgoat.net/ and then down to Lorient then Vannes (a lovely city - worth a visit) then down to St Nazaire and cross the St Nazaire Bridge which is 3.4km long and great fun if you're into big bridges en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Nazaire_Bridge Then down to Pornic via the amusingly named St Michel Chef Chef and on to St Jean de Monts.

This scenic route will probably take a lot longer but if you're in very early and want to make a day of it, it is a lovely route.

While in St Jean, make sure you get to cross the Passage du Gois to the Ile de Normoutier. You'll need to check the tides but its really interesting and great fun. Don't worry about driving your car over - provided you do it within the tide times your car is safe. If you decide to stop and walk - which adds to the trip - then make sure you bring a change of clothes to change into as it gets very mucky. I ended up having to make a big sacrifice and buy a new skirt on the Isle de Normoutier the time we did it lol!! You can then leave via the bridge.

Enjoy your holiday.

I agree that Rennes and Nantes would be the best route. Both cities have ring roads, so you do not have to go through their centres.
