days out/ supermarkets/what to bring ?

Hi we are staying in le Clarys Plage for 2 weeks mid June. We are travelling by car from Roscoff. Would love any advice on what to being with us for our 10 nights there. We are a family of 2 adults and 4 kids. 3 of the kids are under age 2.

I would love 2-3 days out/aquarium , zoo, markets, towns etc.

what supermarkets are nearby to Le Clarys?

Thank you

hi we have stayed in saint jean de monts for the past 2 years and last year we went to a zoo in les sables, its about 40-45 mins drive from saint jean de monts but its a nice drive going through some nice towns. Its not overly big but its a lovely half day and my 2 young girls loved it. The market is on a wed and saturday in the old town bit and i know notre dame just up the road from saint jean de monts have a nice market. As for supermarkets there are 3 big ones in saint jean de monts and there is also an aldi and lidl which are pretty easy to find

Bring : Towels and Bulmers

Days out: Planet Sauvage & Noirmouitier are excellent. Apremount is cool as it is an inland lake with pedallos etc and an impressive castle

Shops: Loads

Go to St Jean De Monts tourist office and request brochures to be sent to you - You have to register first - and you will receive them in a day or Two.

Melanies bar beside the church in the old town is a great haunt for us paddys as it has RTE and all the bogball and stick fighting any Kerry person could dream off !!!!!!!

Hope this helps

You may not find all the supermarkets open. A strange feature of this part of the Vendée coast is that there are a number of large supermarkets which only open during the high season and are mothballed for the rest of the year - reflecting the vast increase in the population during July and August.

Strictly speaking high season is only July and August but, with Whitsun well into June, I suspect that many if not all will have opened by the time of your visit, and there are, of course, some local supermarkets open year round.

If you holiday starts around June 7, it is perhaps worth noting that Monday June 9 is a public holiday - Lundi de Pentecôte.

As well as Noirmoutier, the Ile de Ré and La Rochelle are also worth a visit, even though access to Ré is tolled.

Hi Catriona

We are there mid June for 2 weeks as well, staying with eurocamp. You? One place we have seen that might be worth a look is Puy du Fou. A huge historical theme park. There are of course reviews on here and videos on you tube.

Thanks for asking the question about supermarkets...handy to know monday 9th is a public holiday!

Angela Bird has written widely about the Vendee. Her book "The Vendee" is invaluable if you are visiting. This is her website; http://www.the-vendee.co.uk/

The Ile de Normoutier and the Passage du Gois (a causeway only accessible at low tide) are really interesting and worth seeing. http://www.passagedugois.com/

At the other end of the Vendee, the Ile de Re is also worth seeing.

If you like Lotus flowers, then the Jardins de Court d'Aron are really beautiful. parcsetjardins.fr/pays_de_la_loire/vendee/pa…

Interested in this topic too. We will be there mid July for a week, having spent the previous week in a gite nearer to Bordeaux. This is our first time doing this type of holiday. Have three children (8,6,3) and also driving via Roscoff. Any information or recommendations much appreciated!

If you're coming from Bordeaux, try to get to see the Hennessy Distillery. It starts with a boat ride across the river and the smell from the warehouses is something else. Very enjoyable www.hennessy.com

The beaches are fabulous, really nice and sandy.

There are lots of salt collection areas. You can also pick up different flavoured salts.

Are you using Brittany or Irish Ferries? If you're using Irish ferries, take a travel kettle with you. It will save you lots in cuppas. We bring pastries and some milk and sugar and have breakfast in our cabin rather than queuing for breakfast.

Thanks Bean A. We are going with Irish Ferries and will pack some cereal ,croissants etc for breakfast, thanks. Will check out Hennessey. We are about 40 mins north of Bordeaux for the first week but definitely plan to spend a day there, and visit a few vineyards too (love my wine though not sure the kids will be too impressed!).

Hi I'm just replying to say that I did a big spiel on SJDM if you want to check it out. Fab spot. Stay with Siblu for last four years and it's great. Challins is a lovely town and they have a play centre for the rainy days... I know we were thrilled to find it as the weather last year in August was shocking. Bloody lovely at home then like.
