Bus will be easier as the train station in Cassis is a bit away from the village.

Here are some link Train & Bus or bus only. the Link to M08 line Cassis Marseille is not working

I am just returned from Cassis and now know that the train journey is not a good option if you have any time constraints.

There are major works being carried out on the line between Marseilles and Toulon at the moment so advertised train journeys are frequently cancelled and without much warning.

The other problem is the distance from the station of Cassis to the Port. It is definitely not a good idea to haul luggage from the village to the station; it is too far and all uphill.

We had a huge problem in trying to get a taxi to the station for the 06:00 train -it was important as we had to make a flight connection and the bus does not run this early -

and were eventually extremely lucky when the lady at the hotel managed to persuade a driver to arise early to make the trip. It was a factor I had not even considered when choosing our destination

We took the 8 am train from Avignon to Marseille then another train to Cassis. There was a bus waiting at the station in Cassis to take us to the beach. Arrived by 10:15 am. We would have arrived sooner except the bus driver stopped for a croissant at a local patisserie.

Once you get to the port at Cassis go to the tourist office and pick up a free map and any other information you need. We did not really like Cassis as it seemed so geared towards the tourist and not like a real French village but others love it. We walked straight towards the Calanques which were far nicer and had a lovely lunch at La Presqu'ile.

If you are staying in Marseille, which is great, then the tourist office there is also very helpful and provide free maps. The map gives a walking tour of Le Pannier which is the old town.
