Daytrips from Bamberg

We will be staying in Bamberg for 7 days this September. This will be our 2nd visit to this beautiful city, so we are familiar with the attractions within the city. My husband's goal is to visit as many of the breweries as possible. Since woman does not live by beer alone - does anyone have any suggestions for day trips to the surrounding area? We will have a car. Thanks for any suggestions

Coburg is a lovely small town. Its fortress is where Martin Luther made his statement, "Here I stand, I can do no other." They actually sell "Luther socks" with that statement on them. The nearby town of Lichtenfels claims to have the world's largest basket in the town square, and the basket is pretty big.

I haven't been to the thermal baths in Bad Staffelstein, but a friend of mine says there is also a porcelain outlet there. The town of Kronach has the Rosenberg castle. Your husband might like the German beer town of Kulmbach.

Würzburg might be another option, just an hour away by train.

www.braugasthoefe.com has information on small breweries in Germany that also have food and accomodation. There are lots of them near, Bamberg, at least you would enjoy your lunch or dinner!

Hi "goathill"

I live in Atlanta, GA but I was born and raised in Bamberg. I would recommend you take a trip to Staffelstein, about 25 km frm Bamberg (take Autobahn towards Nurnberg),...there is a beautiful Castle called "Schloss Thurn." They have build a magnificent amuzement park on the Castle grounds. It is amazing. A must see! I went there last year in May. Chek it out...:)

You could drive into the Fraenkische Schweiz from Bamberg. It's between 1- 2 hours away. There are many castles there. Some in ruins, some not. Many caves as well, if you are into that sort of thing. There is a Nutcracker Factory Store In Muggendorf(I believe, I can ask my parents again). The home castle "Greifenstein" of Von Stauffenberg is not far in Heiligenstadt. Streitberg has a castle ruin, a cave and a kind of Jaegermeister brew: the "Streitberger Bitter". You could also go to the Bath (spa) in Staffelstein. It's probably a 30-45 minute drive. There are so many things to see and do around Bamberg. You could even drive to Bayreuth or Coburg. It's not far, compared to American standards. Have you tried to get in touch with the tourist office there?

Hope you'll have a great time.

Sincerely,

Jutta Presnell formerly from Bamberg, Germany

We, too, are leaving for Bamberg on 9/6 -- we will stay until 9/23 and are renting a house -- this is our third trip. We stay in Bamberg, but travel via train to many different cities some of which were mentioned -- Munich is one of my favorites -- they are getting ready for Oktoberfest, starting 9/19 -- I hope you'll travel some by train, because it is fun -- and relaxing. My husband was stationed in Bamberg for 2-1/2 years, and for him it is like going home. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. Audrey Branthoover

Having just returned from visiting both Banz and Vierzehn Heiligen Monasteries this morning, and the Cathedral in Bamberg in the early afternoon, I defininitely recommend not visiting them on a Saturday. The church at Vierzehn Heiligen was closed for a wedding (it probably is a very popular place for them), and the Dom in Bamberg for a musical performance. Something to keep in mind.
