Best hiking area in the Harz mountains

I am planning a weekend trip to the Harz mountains in late summer or fall and wonder if anyone could recommend a favorite hiking area there? I know there are thousands of km of trails in the region but we will only have 2-3 days and would like to do some medium-long hikes and see some nice nature. Seeing the towns is not our main goal.

We will not necessarily have to stay in Quedlinburg, we will take the Berlin-Harz express and can get off in any of the towns along the way.

Thanks for your suggestions!

My two favourites are:

Hiking along the Bode River valley as the leg between Thale and Altenbrak and maybe further to Rübeland for the caves etc. all part of the Harz Witches' Trail

Plus the Goethe trail up to the Brocken summit

I second the recommendation above. Just back from a hike in the Thale region - you can use chair lift up to Rosstrappe and/or gondola up to Hexentanzplatz e.g. The Bode valley is very beautiful and romantic - rocky patches in the lower part near Thale, wider and gentle in the upper part.

The train lines go Berlin-Magdeburg-Halberstadt and split in Halberstadt. The line to Thale goes via Quedlinburg so you could stay in one of both and easily get to the other. Have a look at the Teufelsmauer Weddersleben as well, which is located between Thale and Weddersleben. Another Teufelsmauer (devil's wall) is located east of Blankenburg, These are slim but sometimes high rocky ridges with a length of about 1-2 kilometers each. The first one is surrounded by grasslands and fields. The second one is in the woods.

The other option: Wernigerode: The other train line that splits in Halberstadt goes to Wernigerode. Wernigerode combines a nice town like Quedlinburg with a fairy tale castle and a lcoation directly at the slope. You can use the steam trains up to Schierke at the foot of Brocken summit and hike up via Eckersloch (1.5-2 hours one way). Another option is to hike to Brocken summit from the normal gauge railway station Ilsenburg, which is challenging(900 meters altitude). Moreover there is a rocky scenery at Hohneklippen and Ottofelsen which can be reached from the steam train stations in Drei-Annen-Hohne or Steinerne Renne(this one is still in the valley).

This is very helpful! Do you think the 1.5-2 hour hike you mention would still be enjoyable in January? (We are active and in our twenties, but not expert hikers).

Do you mean the 1.5-2 hour hike up to Brocken summit via Eckerloch?

It can be very enjoyable and it can be awful in January, depending on the weather. In normal years a lot of snow has accumulated until January and everything looks really nice, disadvantage is that snow sometimes becomes ice so just be careful.

But the last years haven't been normal. It's quiet warm right now. We have already got some snow in November, but now it's gone. You can check the recent weather conditions here: www.harztourist.de/brockencam/8_1_0.html

If there is rain and fog it will of course not be enjoyable , but at least an adventure.

After all it's an easy hike which normal people can do, kids as well. Just some stairs in between. So as long as you can manage to hike up 600 meters altitude you'll be fine.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply.

I suppose I mean the Eckersloch hike - do you recommend another route to the summit that is less than 3 hours long? Or is that our best bet?

The altitude will be fine, and we'll be sure to keep checking the weather as we plan.

Thanks again!

There are several longer trails up plus Goetheweg (a trail) which is about 8 km long. Goetheweg starts at the west of Brocken at Torfhaus or alternatively park the car some hundred meters south of Torfhaus near Ehrenfriedhof. Both at the federal road B4. This trail would be best if you come from Bad Harzburg.

If you come from Wernigerode, Schierke and Eckerloch would be better.

How do you think about combining steam train and hike(only possible from Schierke)? You can hike and if you feel like, go down by steam train. It's expensive but it can be fun.

Quickest is Eckerloch if you park the car in Schierke, but if you can get faster to Torfhaus by car, than choose Goetheweg.

The Eckerlochstieg (name of trail) is shown here(the yellow trail upwards): jensunterwegs.de/bhz/…002.jpg

Parking lot f.i. at the youth hostel ("J" in the map).
