Train ticket from Boppard to Cologne

My husband and I are planning a day trip from Boppard to Cologne by train on a weekday. What is the most economical way to make this trip?

Thanks in advance .

If you start after 9 a.m., you could use a "Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket" for 52 €. This is good for all local trains in Germany, but not on other forms of public transport, like buses or public transport in Cologne.

Länder-Tickets:

Unfortunately, the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket is only valid as far as Bonn, and the SchönerTag NRW ticket only in the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen and the northernmost part of Rheinland-Pfalz.

The greater Koblenz tariff area (VRM), which includes Boppard, and the greater Cologne tariff area (VRS) have some good offers for day passes, but you cannot buy VRS tickets in Boppard.

If you want to leave before 9 a.m., you could get a VRM day pass for up to 5 persons (Minigruppenkarte) for just € 21.80, but you would have to leave the train near the state border (e.g. in Remagen or Linz) to buy a VRS ticket. A Mini group ticket from Remagen to Cologne is € 33.90, and you can use it on public transport in Cologne.

You can use the Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket to get from Mainz to Boppard. In addition you would have to buy 2 RMV tickets from the airport to Mainz Hbf or Mainz Römisches Theater for € 4.35 each. Valid on local trains (S, RB, RE) only. Avoid trains that go to Wiesbaden via Mainz-Kastel, they do not stop at Mainz Hbf.

The Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket can be bought at the airport or at Mainz Hbf station if you have to wait for the MRB train to Boppard.

You will be travelling through 3 different states, so the Länder-Tickets are not really an option. If you take local trains during the week, take a Quer-durchs-Land Ticket. On the weekend, a Schönes Wochenende Ticket.

For schedules and prices use http://www.bahn.de/i/view/DEU/en and select "local transport".

Taking a fast train for the Frankfurt to Würzburg section would be more expensive and would save you only about half an hour, as you have to take a local train from Boppard to Frankfurt anyway.
