one night in brig

looking for assistance on brig, switzerland!

we are going to como in august for the grand prix but our first night there we have no plans as our apt isnt ready in como until the next day! we were thinking of making an overnight to switzerland. we arrive at 930am on a friday at malpensa airport and were thinking of doing the bus or train to brig for the night and part of the next day before heading to como.

is this feasible? worth it? brig looks like an awesome quaint old town to explore. would this be worth our time or should we go somewhere else for the night?

thanks for any assistance!

Brig is a typical workaday town with the well known historic Stockalper Palace which was once a home for the rich merchant whom traded with the Italians over the Simplon Pass. Across the Rhone river is Brigs sister town of Glis a much more sleepier place but very much walkable from Brig.

If you take the train to Domodossola and then the bus from out the front of the station to Brig over the Simplon Pass a longer journey than the train directly through the tunnel but a spectacular way of entering Switzerland over the route once taken by Napoléon's army.

Buses depart at 12.50 13.50 and 14.50

The next day to Como take the train to Domodossola and then change for the narrow gauge train through the Centovali to Locarno and then onwards to Bellinzona where you can take a direct train to Como.

As far as I know it isn't Glis which is across the river from Brig - it is Naters. Glis is on the south side of the Rhone like Brig.

Brig is nestled between the Simplon pass and the northern Valais alps. And would provide you with more than enough to see for the half day or so you would be here - but IMO you do not need to come so far. Instead consider going to Stresa on lago Maggiore. Much closer to where you will have been and with the lake and the islands more than enough to do.

well I suppose you don't want to go too far - but why don't you try Belalp which is a mountain resort (small but with great views) which you can reach from the Brig station by bus. Or connect in Brig to Betten and go to Bettmeralp. Both these are German speaking, sort of any way. (They speak Walliserdeutsch there). Or take an international express train headed for Geneva and get off in Sion. This is the station after Brig on this line. Sion is in the central Valais, is French speaking and has a dramatically beautiful old town and some excellent restaurants. On the express train it is roughly 25 mins further on than Brig.
