Do you have any more parameters? Budget? Number of people? IMHO, the best viewing is from the Fawnskin area opposite town, but there are less lodging options there. More specifics may help. Also, that is a very popular time, so you may be limited already.

200 a night is fine. My wife and 17 year old son will be coming.

We have never stayed anywhere in Big Bear but our own cabin, however the following have had good reviews from family members when we need extra space:

This is the most highly recommended by all we know who have stayed there. Right on the lake, you will probably be able to see the fireworks from the deck. Only a short walk to town.

Close to town. Nice pool area. Also short walk to the shore

The largest of the group. This place is the farthest from the shore of the three, but only about three blocks. Near town and has a good restaurant/bar/lounge area.

Hopefully these at least get you a good start on you plans.

Is air conditioning necessary this time of year? I see many houses and cabins to rent but most have no AC.

A/C is not really a necessity. It has been hot lately (close to 90), but the temps are supposed to cool some by July 4. Even when it is hot during the day, though, it still cools considerably at night. An upstairs bedroom in a two-bedroom cabin might stay warm, but if you have a fan that is enough to make it comfortable without having air conditioning.
