West Bali National Park

Hi,

I'm looking to do a one-night trip to the West of Bali, starting from Ubud. I'm trying to find out how long it would take to travel from Ubud to the National Park. Also what are good hotels to stay in on the mainland, and what sort of treks can I do within the National Park? Is it easy to get transport from the park?

Thanks,

Felicity

Hi Felicity C, You really need 2 nights if you are going to do a park trek. From Ubud, depending on traffic, it will take around 4 hours to get to West Bali National Park. You have to go to the office and get your permit ( Rp 25,000) and arrange for a compulsary guide. You can do a half day trek or full day trek. This really should be done the day before you plan to do your trek so you can start out early the next day.

I would book accommodation at Pemuteran as it is only about 15 mins away. The resort you choose may even arrange the trek for you. This would be much easier than you trying to do it. You would also be picked up and dropped off which means you don't have to worry about organising transport.

Take your own food and drink.

Hi Felicitty,

See my tips on the Virtual Tourist website, for snorkeling and trekking in West Bali Park, and for accommodation and food in Pemuteran:

We have just left Pemuteran.

We used Nono, a guide at the National Park to take us on a snorkeling trip but he also takes people trekking in the NP.

If you are interested, Nono's email address is nono_friendsofnature@hotmail.com

He is a very knowledgable and inspiring young man.

Hi there, great you want to discover the Bali National Park, it is a must go place ! But you need at least 2 nights preferable 3 nights staying over there. Go one morning snorkeling around the superb reefs surrounding Menjangan Island, and make a soft expedition the next day inside the wonderful park ! There is plenty of accommodations in all budget range in nearby Pemuteran. Best advise is to get in touch with Star J Travel "Discover & Explore West Bali National Park", which is a division of Indonesia Holidays DMC. They are the only specialist operator inside the Park, and have great trips, professionally and safe operated, and take you to the best sites inside the Park. Just sent a mail to the wonderful owner, Mrs Putu Rarasati at niputurarasati@gmail.com, and she will assist you with anything. Cheers and have fun there. Gert

HI Theo1006, I don't have an account on thevirtualtourist to leave comment there but I read your review of the hike. So in short, did you or did you not recommend it? Did you spot any birds or hear them during the hike?

I'm going to that area later this month to dive. I'm strongly considering doing the easy hike at the park but the photos you posted look quite disappointing!

Anyone else has been there? Could you please share your experience?

(I do think IDR 500K is pricey too!)

Hi Van,

Frankly, no! The hike may appeal to city dwellers with no experience of Indonesia or in nature. But if you have done other hikes, I do not recommend it.

We did not see birds worth mentioning. West Bali National Park is the last vestige of the endangered Bali starling. There are so few of them left, that your chances of seeing one in the wild are nil. We saw them in the breeding centre only.

We paid Rp 250,000 (ot Rp 500,000), but that is still pricey. Considering that for a similar walk on Komodo island the guide charges only Rp 50,000 (two years ago). And the WBNP guide took us to the starling breeding centre where they expected a stiff donation too.

Anothe hike I have wanted to do, but never got round to doing it: from Teluk Terima hike up to the temple at the grave of Jayaprana (members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1c0ea1/). From the highest point you have a great view of Menjangan Island. I have heard that from there one can walk down on the other side of the ridge to a river bed (probably dry in the dry season). Walking along the river should be good bird spotting. No guide required if you have some experience bush-walking. Like to hear your experience if you should attempt it.

Theo1006, thanks for getting back!

About your alternative trail recommendation:

First I don't have time to do a longer, more demanding hike.

Second, there were not many photos of the Teluk Terima hike from that link that look interesting.

Alternatively, do you think that I can just go straight to the breeding center to see the starlings?

Is there anyway to "hike" around Menjangan? I tried to google up but there're only photos of the deers at some beach. It seems no one has ventured further into the island.
