Do you have to pay for the sea plane to the hotel?

I have seen a full board online deal including flights but it doesn't say anything about transfers. It was on travel supermarket with Holiday Genie. anyone have any ideas?

Thanks. x

Welcome to the forum.

The short answer is yes you must pay for transfers- and if not already included in your package deal a seapalne transfer will cost from around $500 pp.

Some islands offer speedboat transfers, others offer seaplane or domestic flight, a couple offer both - as you are posting in the Vilamendoo forum I assume thats the island deal you are looking at in which case Vila is reached by seaplane.

Holiday Genie makes no mention whatsoever of transfers which in my eyes is misleading bordering on negligent.

I have made a dummy booking, got through to payment details and have bypassed the "extras" page.

Destinations where you have no choice about taking transfers should automatically include transfer details even if a price isn't shown.

You need to do your research but of course, the first timer will not know this.

Transfers, mostly expensive transfers, are an integral part of any holiday in the Maldives. Whilst a travel site doesn't have to supply them (they will be organised by the destination resort) the customer booking the holiday should be informed they are required extras.

This is from the Vila web site:

"- There is a 16:00 deadline at the check-in-counter at Trans Maldivian Airways, International Arrivals Hall, for the last flight of the day to Vilamendhoo. If you do not meet this deadline, then the ticket counter staff will reschedule you to depart to Vilamendhoo, the next morning. The ticket counter closes at 1700 and opens at 0600 Hotels are available at the airport and in Male’, to overnight, if needed at your expense.

- Seaplane transfer (Round Trip): $ 340 per Adult, $ 170 per Child."

.....so that gives you the costs for the required transfer to reach the island. And it is the only way to get to the hotel. If you have not paid for the seaplane upfront in your package then you will have to arrange it directly with the island and pay them. They may add it to your room bill or they may require payment for this upon arrival.

The other thing to note, which a good agent who specialises in the Maldives would help you with, is that you need to consider your international flight timings when aiming to connect with a seaplane transfer. Seaplanes only fly in daylight. Some international flights may seem a cheap option, but you would have to overnight in Male upon arrival as they arrive too late for the seaplane transfers.

One of the online biggies well mentioned on here gives you a final price in large font . In tiny font it says it does not include transfers. You have to click to get extras which is transfers. Whilst not as misleading as HG, it isn't far off it. Why not just give the price which includes everything. It has to be a deliberate policy to lure customers with seemingly low prices

THank you both for your help. We decided to go 5* all inclusive to Cancun with unlimited access to Xcaret Park with BA Holidays for the same price. Seemed like less hassel but hopefully one day we will go snorkeling in the Maldives!

Thanks! x

Even the Hayes & Jarvis website doesn't include the seaplane in the first total now...you have to go onto the next page to get that cost added on.

Why is it a "reasonable decision"? They are excluding an essential item from the (initial) holiday total. Many posters on here (and probably many more who don't use the forum) seem to think there are different (cheaper) options to get to a resort which requires a seaplane transfer. In a few cases there is a domestic flight + boat option, which is usually a little cheaper, but for the majority of islands in this category their specified seaplane transfer is still the only way to reach the accommodation once booked.
