Achill island or Aran islands or Inishbofin

We are staying a week in Clifden and working on our day trips--wondering if there are any thoughts on the Islands?

We're thinking Aran...but have read wonderful things on Achill too. Inishbofin is close, but wonder if it's as wonderful as the others. Is Achill too far? It would just be a day trip.

Thank you for any advice!

Achill is a nice days 'drive' from Clifden, and yes you can drive to Achill because it is linked to the mainland by a road bridge whereas the others require a boat trip for pedestrians only. Other places that you can stop off on your day to Achill would be Wastport, while the National Museum of Countrylife is well worth a visit just outside Castlebar. Achill Island is scenic and you can drive around it leisurely over a few hours.

Sorry I mean't to say Westport and not Wastport, the folks in Co. Mayo take great pride in their 'tidy' town.

Hard choice dickensd, and it could just come down to that point of accessibility, and as you'll have a wider choice of places to visit with the car on Achill - and as Cavan007 mentioned, you would not be disappointed with that choice.

Cleggan is only 20 minutes away, making Inis Boffin more convenient than the Arans - yet probably be the most remote island experience of all, with blow holes similar to the bridges of Ross and a castle with a very interesting past.

Inis Mor is the next easiest to get to, with a service from Galway city (just an hour from Galway) and Rossaveal (or Ros an Mhíl) is over an hour from Clifden - where you have access to all the Arans.

Dun Aengus (Inis Mor)is probably the trek you'd take on getting off the boat here, and there's a selection of choices for bikes - and you'll probably doing the same as us, and picking up one close the to the pier.

You can cycle straight to Dun Aengus, or turn right just past the Luck Star pub (hard to miss:) and cycle the coast - where you'll get very close to seals.

I've just spent a week on Inis Oirr, so slightly biased here - but it is very nice, but I think the 3 choices above would make more sense, because you'd have more time on the islands.

Inis Mann has alot to offer, guessing the least visited Aran, because its harder to reach than Inis Oirr from Doolin, Inis Mor from Galway, however when taking the ferry from IO to IM, I noticed development on the sea front, so maybe they are righting that?

Probably only confused you further!

Dickensd

Having only a day trip, I would have to recommend that you opt for Achill. As the other posters it is one of the jewels of County Mayo and is accessible by car. This would make the day altogether more relaxing for you and will, as Cavan points out, open up other areas of the county for you to explore.

Whatever your decision, be sure to have a lovely trip!

Thanks for the Achill info too...we're planning a trip to Westport, maybe we can do both Achill and Aran Islands as day trips.

Very excited for our trip!!
