Best way to get from County Clare to Dublin? Train?

I am flying into Shannon in June and planning on spending 3 nights before flying out of Dublin to go to Amsterdam (no direct flight from SNN to AMS). Is there a reliable train that could get me from that general area to Dublin, if my flight out of Dublin leaves at either 11:45am or 1:45pm?

Or would my best bet be to take the first flight from Shannon to Dublin and have a 4 hour layover at the Dublin airport?

Also, how much would trains be? And can you book them in advance?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Train services in Ireland are operated by Irish Rail and are quite reliable. There are direct services from Limerick (southern end of County Clare) to Dublin and from Galway (northern end of County Clare) to Dublin. There is also a newly opened (or I should say reopened) local rail service between Galway and Limerick.

If you want to take the early flight to Amsterdam, you need to be at Dublin Airport at say 9.45am. There is a daily 6.35 service from Limerick which get to Dublin Heuston at 9.00.This would be OK to get you to Dublin Airport by taxi for 9.45ish. Alternatively, you could take an Airlink 748 bus from Heuston to the airport but this would take longer - I'd prefer to take a taxi. If travelling from Galway, there is a 6.05 departure which get to Heuston at 8.50.

For details of fares, online booking and alternative train services (including connecting services between Limerick and Galway) see www.irishrail,ie.

Also note that you can get direct coach services to Dublin Airport from both Limerick and Galway. See www.gobus.ie for a direct Galway to Dublin Airport service and www.jjkavanagh.ie for Shannon/Limerick to Dublin Airport options. Also, Bus Eireann (www.buseireann.ie) also offer services on these routes.

There's a train station in Sixmilebridge which is just outside of Shannon town with onward links via Galway or Limerick.

There's a good selection of cab services from Shannon airport and centre - and a frequent bus service to Sixmilebridge.

Bus from Shannon to Galway or Limerick (or Dublin) the train link from Limerick to Galway has been a long awaited disappointment. As has been said you can get to Dublin from Shannon, Galway & Limerick direct, both train and bus are better pre booked.
