Holiday in West Cork

Hi

We have two small boys aged 2 and 6 months. We are considering going to West Cork for a week in July renting a house in the Haven's End development near Tragumna Beach in Skibbereen. Has anyone been here?? Would love to hear of your experiences. Myself or my husband aren't familiar with this part of the world!

Thanks!

Kate

Hi! I haven't stayed there but if it's at Tragumna Beach it's very rural. It's a small beach in a quiet area. There's lots of places to explore on day trips from there but if you have great weather (fingers crossed) you'll probably just stay put!

Some day trips would be Mizen Head (about 45 min away), Baltimore where you could take a boat trip to Sherkin or Cape Clear Island, Lough Hyne, Lis Ard Estate in Skibbereen (great walking trails) Glandor, Union Hall and Castletownsend are cute little villages not too far away.

It's a gorgeous area! As long as you're not looking for major nightlife you'll have a great time (there is a pub there but unfortunately haven't been there yet!)

Enjoy

Some other worth-while attractions in the area:

Bantry, Sheeps Head, Castle Townshend -- both the town, harbor and castle, but also, a hike up to Knockdrum megalithicireland.com/…20Fort.html

From there, you can view the Three Fingers stone row alignment from a safe distance (The field THEY stand in often includes bulls!).

Also just a short drive away, is Drombeg Stone Circle. www.stonepages.com/ireland/drombeg.html

There is a great playground in nearby Skibbereen. In fact all the towns in the area are well served with playgrounds. Tragumna is a small sandy beach with a life guard. Reen Wood near Castletownsend has little fairy houses which children enjoy. They are small so keep your eyes peeled. Pedal boats in Rosscarbery. Cinema in Clonakilty & Bantry. Sandy beaches also in Rosscarbery (The Warren) & throughout the area. Fota Wildlife Park in Cork is great for small kids too.
