Train from Cobh to Cork and back again ?

We will be in Cobh one day (cruise-ship port). Have been to Blarney Castle and other places in Ireland on past trips. Not really interested in anything but pubs or shops and just walking around the city this time.

We like to take trains in Europe - just a nice way to "see the country".

Wondering if it makes sense to take the train from Cobh (understand that it is right near the cruise-port) to Cork - walk around Cork for an hour or two (pubs, shopping, etc.) and then take the train back to Cobh.

Comments ? THANK YOU

It's very practical.

Trains run from 6am to 10pm (8am-10pm on Sundays). There are trains from Cobh to Cork at half past every hour and trains from Cork to Cobh on the hour.

On weekdays, there are also additional services during rush hour (7am-9am and 4:30pm-6:30pm). For large cruise ships they will also lay on special trains to cater for demand.

Be aware that some cruise ship passengers have reported problems buying tickets because of the large extra volume of passengers, so there is probably no harm being in the station some time before departure.

Should you be interested in visiting Midleton Distillery as well as Cork, do this after the visit to Cork. Because of the train timings, there is a long wait for a connection (in Glounethaune) when travelling Cobh to Midleton, while it is only a 13 minute wait when going from Midleton to Cobh.

Perfectly do-able. The rail journey from Cóbh to Cork is quite pleasant. Cóbh's station is the red-bricked building near the quayside. The heritage centre there is well worth a visit too. Details:

http://www.cobhheritage.com/

Sometimes there are additional trains to those shown in the timetable when a cruise liner is in port. The Journey Planner on the homepage of the Irish Rail website will show the full range of services operating on the day.

Upon arrival at Cork Kent station it's around a ten minute walk into the city - alternatively Bus Éireann route 205 from outside the front of the station.

Hope you have an enjoyable visit.

Don't bother waiting for the bus at Kent Train station to take you to Cork city. As said already it's only a 10 min easy walk, you could potentially get to the bus station before the bus, if you do !

When you get to the river (North channel of the River Lee), just cross the first bridge you meet and follow the quays upriver towards the Opera House. On the way, depending on the bridge you cross, you'll find Merchants Quay shopping mall. If you stay on the quay, working upriver, you'll find Larry Tompkins pub. After that you'll come to the Opera House and Emmet Place - shopper's heaven: Kilkenny Shop, and the Opera Lane quarter with all the big names, restaurants, coffee shops and more pubs. One of Cork's oldest pubs is Le Chateau on Patrick St.

Don't miss your return train!!

Mags.

You could also take the Cobh Road Train (tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g211925-…)

Great way to see the town of Cobh and it stops off at the Cathedral also which is near the Roaring Donkey pub if you fancy a pint or two!"!
