Athlone -midweek, things to do!

myself and missus thinking of going to Athlone for a two night midweek break in a couple of weeks time. Can any advise if Athlone is the type of place that could keep us amused for a couple of days. All we want is a bit of relaxation, bit of culture, few drinks and maybe a few shops/entertainment. thanks!

You could head out to Clonmacnoise, take one of the viking boat trips on the Shannon.

Into county Roscommon - theres http://www.baysports.ie/tourist.php

for kayaking, and windsurfing etc - this is about beside the Hodson Bay Hotel. And there is a nice pitch and putt course on the Tuam road.

There is plenty of Shopping and lots of Pubs including Seans Bar (the oldest Pub in Ireland) you could take a trip to Lough Ree and hunt for the Monster but I suggest a trip to a few bars if you want to see the Beast. I am fairly sure you will find enough to occupy your time in town perhaps take a look at what's on in Moat if there's nothing in town to suit entertainment wise.
