Best stop on M6 for nice place to spend evening on road?

Looking for a place to stay in between Doolin and a visit to Newgrange. Athlone seems to be midway on the map. Are there any suggestions on where to stay for a nice night with free parking and within walking distance to a good meal? We are trying to stay in places that are memorable instead of the Holiday Inn but want to keep the budget in mind. Thanks for any suggestions!

Athlone certainly seems to be a good stop on your itinerary. Sorry, can't recommend a particular place but I am sure this website will be of help: www.athlone.ie/accommodation/.

We used to stay in Tullamore in the days before the M6, Birr is also an option depending on the route between the two places,

I was hoping for a B&B... but there seems to be a few options in Athlone. The sheraton and raddison look to be good hotel choices but I'm really loving the one B&B near the bridge and the castle. It's near Seans Bar which is real attractive. I'm just worried about parking. Thanks everyone for the help.

Never been there but check the TA site for B&Bs in Athlone: tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g212091-c2-Athlone_Co…

Good luck! Enjoy.

Suggestions for places to eat in Athlone from Monday's Irish Times:

Quote:

EUROPEAN AGENDA at The Left Bank Bistro

Athlone is well served by restaurants, including Kin Khao (Thai), the Olive Grove (bistro) and the more upmarket Wine Port. But it’s the Left Bank Bistro which has carved out a reputation as the local favourite.

The early bird – two courses for €20, three courses for €25 – is available all night from Tuesday to Friday and until 7.30pm on Saturdays, and includes European and Oriental dishes.

Fry Place, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. Tel: 090 6494446.

Athlone is probably like most other towns in Ireland - there is a charge between €1/ €2 per hour for on street parking, generally between the hours 8.00 AM and 6.00 PM, but overnight is free.

If you are particularly interested in that B&B beside Sean's Bar, why not contact the B&B and ask them about the parking facilities. It is quite possible that they have their own car parking facility or at least they will be able to advise you where you can park.

I found Athlone really cheap for parking. We parked in the underground carpark in the city centre near this hotel and shopping centre and it was really reasonable. They had all day parking there also for 3 euros per day.

I found Athlone good for shopping. Can't comment about food as we didn't eat there (although got a lovely hot drink in O' Brians)
