Day vist from a cruise ship

It is now some 3 years on from the posted reveiws.

I would like to know what day trips will run from Olden on 6th June 2013, how much do they cost, where do they go, and how far from cruise ship docking point can we pick up a trip? Which trip is recommended?

The main attraction when visiting Olden village is the excursion to Briksdalen Glacier. I do not think there are any other tours on offer. Some said there was a noody train around the village.

There is also a local bus - timetables and prices are not available just yet.

There are a variety of options, most of which can be booked onboard your cruise ship. If you prefer "doing your own thing" there is indeed a road-train which starts from the parking area where the ship moors (Olden is not a port, just a dock for one ship to moor alongside). Zooming around the fjord for 45 minutes or so on a rib is a bit of fun - didn't even get wet! but the trip to the Briksdal Glacier is worth it - a scenic drive along the lake and then a serious walk up to the glacier, around a mile or so and quite steep in places - no peep-toe stilettos! You can go rafting in the glacial lake at the top, then have a beer in the restaurant at "base camp" before returning to the ship.

We have just returned from Olden, there is a land train for 15kr that you can get from the dockside. It goes every half hour and travels up one side of the lake and down the other. It was good value. We also decided to splash out on the helicopter trip 1100kr each. We were taken by car about half a mile up the road to meet the helicopter and there were just the two of us on board. It was absoluely wonderful. We were taken up into the valley and flew very low over a glacier. We were then taken out over the fijord with a breathtaking view of the ship from above. I would recommend it if you have a head for heights.
