Redwood Forest, CA

Can someone recommend a place to stay in the Redwoods and the best place to see for a one day excursion?

My boyfriend and I will be arriving on the evening of September 30, 2012 on our way down from Portland. We would like to spend the evening near the forest, then start in the morning and have the whole next day to explore before continuing our road trip down to Napa.

We would like to stay in the $100 range for lodging, less is ok, but not much more. Looking fr the best value for that price.

Also looking for a recommendation on what to see given this one day time frame.

Lastly, what's the weather like at this time?

Thanks in advance!

Crescent City is a good place to stay. There are motels in your budget & it marks the beginning of 'the redwood forest.'

Thank you. I've read about Crescent City in other posts. I looked on a map and it seems to be north of the forest. Do you know about how far away it is from a scenic entrance?

There are terrific redwoods just north (Jedidiah Smith State Park; see Stout Grove) and south of CC. Then you can stop on way down 101 at Humbolt Park just north of Garberville and see Avenue of the Giants. Jedidiah is my fav place in Redwoods.

Just check motels in CC; you should find something in your range.

Weather will be cool, low 60s high, and could be wet.

There is not an entrance to Redwood National Park. The drive from CC down to Trinidad is spectacular. It's only about 1 hour, but you'll be making many stops!

Hi ella4444, Redwood National Park is not set up like many others! At many NP's you drive to a location, then go through an entrance gate, then tour around the park.

Redwood NP has no entrance or exits. The road that goes through the park is the only highway in this part of the state -- Highway 101. Since it is the only through road here, Highway 101 is just like any other highway anywhere, albeit much more scenic.

Unless you pay close attention, you'll never really know when you are "in" the park, and when you are not! There are redwood forests all through this area, along with private property - homes, ranches and farms. To make it even more confusing, some of the areas are actually "State" Parks, and exist within the NP's boundaries :-)

But -- you really don't have to worry about all that!

Much of the scenic forest area is located between Crescent City and the tiny town of Orick, north of Trinidad. If you drive straight through it's about an hour or so between the two towns. There is also a forest section about an hour south of Eureka, called Avenue of the Giants.

Do take the Newton Drury scenic route - it's old Highway 101 and winds right through thousands of big trees. Going south, you'll cross the "golden bears" Klamath bridge, then the freeway starts. In 2-3 miles you'll see the exit for Newton Drury. Don't miss it as it's the only one. It will then take you back out onto present-day 101 near Prairie Meadow.

Oh, forgot the weather...... should be very nice and most likely dry :-) September is usually very pleasant. Highs will range from mid 60's on the ocean to upper 70's inland.

You might be interested in the Crescent Beach Motel in Crescent City as it's right on the beach. Or, if you want to stay inland more "amongst" the redwoods, look at Hiouchi Motel which is about 8-10 miles inland. It's older and not fancy but has a great price!

Be sure to drive Howland Hill Road.
