GOR in 3 days - some questions

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are planning a vacation to Australia in the first week of June.We have the following itinerary for the GOR:

1) Day 1 - Melbourne - Lorne (with a few stops in between, haven't yet worked out where to stop)

Crash at Lorne

2) Day 2 - Lorne - Port Campbell

Crash at port Campbell

3) Port Campbell back to Melbourne

I have the following questions with regard to this:

1) How will the weather be on the GOR in June?

2) Is Lorne a good choice for staying overnight? We want nothing fancy, just a clean place and good food!

3) We are planning to drive back to Melbourne from Port Campbell. Would you recommend that we go on to Warrnambol, Port Fairy,Portland and then drive back to Melbourne from Portland?

4) How long does it take to drive back to Melbourne from Port Campbell through the inland route?

Any help is very appreciated! Thanks.

1. Cold. Windy. Might rain.

2. Yes. Plenty of options from budget to luxury.

3. No. Portland is 4-4/12 hours solid driving from Melbourne via Mortlake and really not worth the extra drive. I know. I lived there for 7 years.

4. About 3 hours via Colac without stops.

Best attempted after a nights sleep, rather than fresh off a 12 hour flight.

Have a great time!

As above!

... but maybe drive to Warrnambool for your second night just because there's nothing at all to do in Port Campbell after dark in the Winter. It's 3 hrs inland back to Melbourne from Warrnambool via Mortlake & Cressy.

Hello

Suggest you plan to stay in Warrnambool as the whales should be in at Logan Beach by then. Take a look at visitwarrnambool web site.

As mentioned there are a lot more eating and accommodation options in Warrnambool also.

Have a great trip.

Hi,

Lorne is a lovely place to stay for your first night. I also enjoy Port Campbell but in winter you would be best to stay at Warrnambool.

Thanks every one! Unfortunately my Australia trip has been shelved due to some personal reasons. I'm deeply disappointed but planning to make this trip in September. Will keep in mind all your suggestions.

Thanks a lot!

OP 1 >>Crash at Lorne<< Ouch, I know you meant stay overnight but please! Instant mental image of car going onto footpath which was in the news a while back.

OP 2 Best to start your own thread, especially as the subject of THIS thread, the GOR, is only a small part of your question about driving from Adelaide and seeing the Grampians.
