Great Ocean Road 7 day Itinerary

My husband and I are planning a 7 day self-drive trip from Melbourne to Port Fairy and return, along the GOR both ways (we do not want to go inland). We already have booked accommodation in Port Fairy for 2 nights and would welcome any other recommendations along the way eg. Lorne, Apollo Bay, Port Campbell etc. as we are unfamiliar with this area. We need it to be relaxing, hence why we are taking our time. We would also like to stay at least a couple of nights in each place rather than just 1 night here and there. Our trip is planned for the end of May and would like to see as much as possible of this wonderful area. Any help with itinerary, towns to stay, accommodation and sights not to miss would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

Which 2 nights have you booked your accommodation in Port Fairy (start/middle/end of the 7 days)?

I understand the desire to spend a couple of nights in each place, but depending on how much you want to see along the way this could lead to a bit of backtracking.

However based on this requirement and assuming the Port Fairy bit is in the middle I would say 2 nights Lorne, 2 nights Port Fairy, 2 nights Apollo Bay.

Thanks ShazDwn! Yes Port Fairy is in the middle and we had thought along the lines of Lorne and Apollo Bay. The backtracking really doesn't worry us as we don't mind the driving and no where seems to far anyway. Thank you so much for your feedback!

There is a lot to see and do. What you plan to do will give you a good insight into the GOR and you will really experience its atmosphere. What ShazDwn has suggested makes sense, if time permits I would also look at spending 1 night in Geelong and visiting the Bellarine Peninsula. Doing a bay side drive to Port Arlington, Indented heads and stopping for lunch at Queenscliff at Port Phillip heads.

If you are coming from Melbourne there is an excellent information centre at the service station just before you get to Avalon on the highway. Here you will be able to get plenty of information and maps to help plan your trip. Besides the beaches there are a number waterfalls some are accessible easily by car some you will have to walk into.

Lake Elizabeth in the Otway's on the Apollo bay forest road is a lesser known attraction that is beautiful and serene with the chance of spotting the elusive platypus.

Port Fairy is a beautiful town and your stay there will also give you the chance to explore Tower Hill between Warrnambool and Port Fairy as well as Warrnambool and Port Fairy.

Take the Geelong by pass road on Geelongs northern outskirts and then the Anglesea road turn off on Geelong's southern outskirts.

When you get to the Bellbrae roundabout you can either continue on to Anglesea or do a diversion and have a look at Torquay before continuing on to Lorne

Just be aware that the planned upgrade of the GOR is expect to get underway late January or early February with road works likely at Anglesea and Lorne and at Allansford near Warrnambool.

Enjoy planning your trip and if you think we can assist please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you so much Famrick for all your helpful local knowledge! It is very much appreciated and there are places and sights you mentioned that we did not know about together with the heads up on the road works. We anticipate the weather at the time of year will be fairly cold and windy. Would this be correct? Also, do you have any recommendations on where to stay in Geelong and also wondering what the accommodation would be like at Queenscliffe? Again, thanks for all your help!

To me 7 days is a little excessive for the GOR in both directions.

But make sure you check out the Ottway National Park. Some beautiful waterfalls in that area, as well as the treetop walk. The lighthouses are quite nice too along that stretch of road.

I'd say 4 nights you could do the GOR, stopping everywhere, and looking at stuff in between.

If you must go 7 days, it'll give you a chance to look at all the small towns along the way as well.

12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Arch, Bay of Islands, are all definites imho.

It can get cold and wet in the Otway's and along the GOR at that time of the year and some times the changing moods of the weather can add to the captivating atmosphere of travelling along the GOR.

Erskine falls is one many waterfalls in the Otway's and is only a short drive out of Lorne and the look outs are an easy walk from the car park

Geelong is the states second biggest city and a major port in its own right. There is a range of accommodation suitable to all budgets and tastes.

The Chifley motel on the Esplanade, the Mercure in the heart of town, the Sheridan on the eastern beach road all offer good views of Corio bay and are just a few of what is available. A google search or a search on TA will bring up many others worth looking at.

At Queenscliff and the Bellarine there is a number of motels and self catering cabins. The Beacon resort motel is just one of a many motels and hotels in the area and gets good reviews.

Also the Queenscliff - Sorrento ferry has an hourly timetable and its a good experience to travel on the ferry to Sorrento as a foot passenger, have lunch and perhaps walk to the Sorrento back beach before returning to Queenscliff.

The town is something of an iconic destination, you can just browse the shops, visit the fort or just have a picnic and watch the ships entering and leaving Port Phillip bay, there is a lot you can do to fill in the time.

Enjoy planning your trip.
