Great Ocean Road Itinerary suggestions?

Hi guys, got some friends visiting next week and we're planning on doing the Great Ocean Road trip - I live in Adelaide, so the idea is to drive to Geelong/Torquay/Lorne/Anglesea/somethinglikethat the first day and then slowly wind our way back. Was wondering if folks had suggestions for

(1) where to stop the first night - Geelong? should I push through to Lorne? stop at Torquay or Anglesea?

(2) Second night - Apollo Bay or Port Campbell? We're planning on stopping the third night in Mount Gambier, if that helps

Also any suggestions for hotels/motels? There's three of us, which can make sourcing rooms a tad hard, and we'd like to keep it cheap but not live out of the car lol.

If you are driving from Adelaide stopping overnight and then tackling the GOR here's my suggestion.

Stop 2 nights at Geelong and chill out explore the Bellarine and recover before tackling the GOR.

The GOR is a difficult drive that requires a lot of concentration.

1 night at Apollo Bay - 1 night at Warrnambool followed by another at either Mount Gambier or Robe.

Www.visitvictoria.com.au has more info.

Don't hesitate to come back seeking more info if you want some local tips on wag to see in the area.

There is heaps of relevant posts on the GOR forum.

One more tip don't camp in your car overnight as it is illegal along the GOR and potentially dangerous.

The are a couple of Big4 caravan parks along the route that offer comfortable cabins at a reasonable price.

You should not have any problems finding accommodation at this time of the year.

Safe travels.

Thanks - we don't have that much time, alas - we really only have the three night/four days heh. Any good places to stay in geelong that you'd suggest? Yeah I know about the camping in cars thing ^^ we wouldn't all fit in any case

Geelong has a great range of accommodation suitable for all budgets and tastes.

A few of these are along the waterfront either on the edge of the cbd or close by. The quality motel is on the Esplanade on the edge of the bay there is also the Sheraton, the Mercure and a few of smaller motels close to the cbd.

A long the Barwon river at Belmont there is a Big4 cabin park plus a newer one on the Bellarine highway at Wallington.

A google search will provide more info about accommodation in Geelong, www.big4.com.au has info about caravan parks and self contained cabins along the route you plan to take.

Good luck with this.

We recently stayed in Beachcomber motel in Apollo Bay, and Parkview Motel at Port Campbell. Both were great value and offered family/triple rooms. Highly recommend them both. Check out the reviews section for more details.

can GOR be done in one day as a day trip from Melbourne, going only as far as 12 Apostles?

That kinda depends on if you actually want to see anything other than the twelve apostles? If you go by the inland route, googlemaps tells me it takes 3 hours... but the coastal road being what it is, add at least another 2 hours for the twisting road, and you'll want to stop and see things... you'd want to at least double that drive time...

Jacka, we don't recommend self driving if you only have one day as the roads are windy & not easy to drive. If you can't allow 2 days, please look at the small group tours such as Go West & ATWAD.

jackal51 the GOR is close to a round trip of 600k using the inland route and the GOR ellenwillows comments are sound advice. If you want to experience the GOR and you have only one day to do so travel only as far as Lorne or Apollo Bay or do as suggested and go on one of the excellent small group day tours.
