I understand there is good diving on Malta. My question is: during May does one need a wet suit? We are looking for snorkel/diving with warm waters. thanks
The sea will be warming up in May, but the temperature will only be 18 degrees. This is fine with a wetsuit, but cold otherwise. The sea temperature would be better if you could delay your trip to June, and would be perfect in July, August and September. I recently learned to dive (October) and the average sea temperature then was 25 degrees, perfect!! Malta and Gozo do have some good dive sites.
Thanks trip... I had a feeling that that was the case. We will wait till water temp is warm. I am one of those people who do not like going in cold water. I need to be able to relax and cold is not it!
I would say that a 5mm would be a minimum unless you are portly like myself. I can cope with a 3mm but have to admit that first step in is best done with a snorkel rather than use all my air in one gasp !!
The mad thing is that it's still much warmer than at home but chilly by Maltese standards.
Underwater photography is usually better in my opinion in May too.
Hi, although it will be around 18c, most dive schools will provide you with a 2 piece 5mm wetsuit, therefor you are covered in 10mm so you really shouldn't get that cold. I agree with Scubapro, May's water is much clearer than July/August, you'll see more marine life too.
